Do I re-use my drive?

had a Samsung spinpoint 120G Hang at the powering up screen, so for ease I bought a preconfigured drive.

Now then, having run HUTIL on the drive & it finding nothing wrong, & reformatting it in my PC, do I load it back up with one of my images, & shove it into a TiVo I just picked up on ebay? Nothing I've tried says the drive has any errors on it, so I cant see why not.

Can you ? :confused:

I would - if HUTIL says it's OK then it's OK.
If it is a bit elderly you might want to consider the replacement cost vs. the time taken to configure and install it.
If it were mine I would do it but then look - I'm still running one of my original drives :)
If it dies it's only TV and the software, configuration and hacks are backed up.

How upset would you be if you lost all recordings on the drive at any time?

If the answer is "not much" (you mainly timeshift) then re-use the drive,
otherwise don't risk it.

In truth not much, we never have many recordings last more than a week, or so

I think you may have to go through a lengthy process to make the drive work in a TiVo after formatting it in a PC (may only apply to WinXP/2000).

There is a thread on this subject somewhere on the forum, but I don't have time to find it right now.

I think it is OK if you completely re-image the drive that is due to go in the Tivo.

AIUI, the problem occurs when you put a working Tivo drive into a PC, and boot up with XP, it writes a header record or something that means Tivo can no longer read it. There are ways around this (search for MakeTivoBootable). This is what you will need to do if there are recordings on the drive that you want to keep.

But if you completely re-image the drive, that fixes the problem as well, it is just that any recordings on there have obvioulsy been deleted!

I've done this before, but not with a basil'd drive, your right you can format a drive in XP, and then re-image & its fine, its only when you boot a TiVo drive in XP it screws up.

You don't neet to reformat the drive - putting the image on it is all that is required.

I formatted it to give at a good testing for errors, no other reason really. I'll try putting an image on it tomorrow
