Is there something similar to a Tivo that I can get that will record shows for less than $100?
Yes, a VCR.

Or you can take your chances buying a second hand S1.

You will not find any free to use DVR new for <$200 even.

stevel's answer still applies. This is true for doing any type of recording. My suggestion would be to buy an older Series 1 which can be used without a subscription.

Does your local cable provider offer a DVR? It's still a monthly fee, but at least there's no initial cash outlay and it's typically a little cheaper than the Official Tivo service. You might have to have the high-end programming package though, which would kinda push you back into the land of over-priced TeeVee.
