All I use one of my TIVOs for is to download (and watch) movies from my PC using Pytivo and to occasionally watch a live sports program via cable - I have a cable card. I never record shows with this unit. Do I need TIVO service for the downloading. How about to watch TV channels?

Yes. Tivo service is required for everything from guide, recording to transfer ability. Without it, you can only watch Live TV, no trick play (FF, REW, Pause, etc.), AND play already recorded/stored shows.

Tivo ended support for Series 3 and older models, so they can never be activated again. Only those STILL with service (Mostly Lifetime service) can continue operating.

As mentioned above in different verbiage, network connectivity requires a subscription, also of note, the new TE4 or Hydra OS will not let you do what you are doing, i.e. upload from a PC to the Tivo.

If you mean "in spite of having a subscription to the TiVo Service, then why not?

Will it still let you copy shows from the TiVo to a PC via Desktop?
