Do I ~HAVE~ to pay service? (SERIES 1)

I am getting a HDR212 Series 1 model and I was wondering.... Must I pay service?? I just want to rewind, pause, slow motion ect. with TV... I don't mind if I have to enter time of a show in manually rather than selecting it from a guide.... but is it ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to pay?
READ:

I bought one on eBay without a hard drive and I have a hard drive ready and I also have InstantCake at my side... This means that there is software version 3.0 on my TiVo box.... would this make a difference since it is an updated software???
