Is there a way to add wireless to the Direct TV TIVO series 2 units?
WHat is needed to make this work?

Thanks,
Tom

Only if you hack it..

Do some searches, and you will find everything you need to know.

If you have an R10... you don't have to search, as it can't be hacked unless you want to desolder a chip, reprogram it, and re-solder it back in.
Furthermore -- not much point.

HMO is not enabled without use of "the Zipper", which, while pretty easy, is not for the faint of heart.
Check the Underground.
I have 2 Hughes Series 2 Direct TV Tivo units. Hacking is ok. Too much dis-information out on the web to just go try everything. I am looking for someone who has done it, and can tell me what is needed, and what is compatible hardware.

Tom
I haven't done this yet (but plan on doing it by the end of the week with the Series 2 DTiVos I have coming), but this really seems to be the way to go now:

I've read through the instructions a few times and read the various posts in the thread in the Underground on this and it seems like the easiest (without buying a hacked drive already) way to do this.

I have not used the zipper, but I was researching hacking my DTivos at the same time as Gunnyman (one of the authors of the zipper script) did his. I have every confidence in the information that Gunny has provided.

You can mess up your DTivo if you don't know what you are doing. While it is not that difficult to restore your DTivo to working condition, if you don't know why you messed up in the first place, then it might be difficult to restore. Read everything carefully and follow instructions. There are a lot of us who have hacked their DTivos so I'm sure you can get lots of advice if you have questions over at the Tivo Underground section.
Spud,
I have read through the zipper pages, and feel comfortable with the hacks. What was not clear is adding USB wireless to the systems. Will I be able to set SSID and encryption keys? Will the normal TIVO sharing screens automatically show up that allow playback of content stored on another unit?

Thx,
Tom
Also looking for known good USB wireless adapters
thanks,
Tom

I hacked my DTivo from 3.x to 4.01 to 6.2. 4.01 allowed you to set SSID & encryption, 6.2 does not. I believe rbautch's enhancement script will allow you to do this on 6.2

As far as which USB wireless adapters, check the Tivo Website. The hacked DTivo does not support wireless G. Also take special note of version numbers of the adapters as some will work and some won't.
What does work for wireless is using the USB to Ethernet adapter and then using a bridge or gaming adapter. Tivo now has a wireless adapter, do not know if it works on the DTiVo.

Awwww, Earl....
I love you, man.

Nawww, really
:)

socket it! really! just in case!

I posted a cheaper way of doing that here.
THanks for all of the responses, but there is not a consensus here. Has anybody here actually added wireless capability to a Hughes Series 2 DTivo unit?
What hardware works?

Thanks,
Tom
You want to add a USB wireless adapter directly to a DirecTiVo? I believe several folks have added 801.11b wireless adapters to hacked DirecTiVos, but no one seems to have working 802.11g adapters working - even the Tivo blessed one(s).
Larry,
That is the goal. Add a USB wireless adapter to the DTivo's using existing wireless network inthe house, with SSID and encryption.
Thanks,
Tom
tom, also you may want to move these questions to the Underground part of this forum -- The folks in the know hang out there more and you may get faster answers.
802.11g adapter will not work with a DirecTiVo, as only TiVo software 7.1+ supports "g."
Our son connected our three Tivo's. Two are wired and one is wireless. The wireless connection was made using a Linksys WUSB11 wireless USB adapter Ver 2.8 Tivo. He bought it new on eBay for $27 plus $7.50 S&H.

The wireless unit is the furthest from the router and it worked good. After it was operating, he also replaced the existing router (Linsys) with a new Netgear 240M which also works great.

I recently added a Netgear MA111 to my HDVR2. I set the SSID in the configuration (while using Zipper), and removed the WEP key from the router. It connected perfectly. Then, I grabbed some files from the other forum that allowed me to use my own WEP key on it. Set that, reset the key on the router back to what it was, and all went smoothly.

But yes, this convo probably belongs in the underground section.
I'm connected on a 54G network with WPA encryption enabled. I have 1 wired and 2 wireless DTivos.

All 3 DTivos (2 Philips DSR704, 1 Hughes SD-DVR80) have a USB to Ethernet adapter (Netgear FA120). One is hard-wired to the router. The other two are wired to an ethernet wireless bridge (ViewSonic WAPBR-100 - almost impossible to find, but I got my most recent one for $30).

When I zippered the boxes, I included the USB 2 drivers.

I can transfer shows from any DTivo to another faster than real time.
