If I recall correctly, The Black Hole was Disney's first film to receive a PG rating. I loved the movie as a kid. I was seven years old when I saw it in the theater, and Maximillion the evil robot scared the crap out of me. Those other faceless robots were pretty freaky as well.

I remember seeing this as a young teen. I just rewatched it on Disney+. It seems very outdated compared to a movie like Star Wars. The story is very dark for Disney and effects were good for the day I guess. The dialogue was silly at times and used slang that seemed old even for the late 70's. It has a lot of big star talent in the movie.

Thats true - The Black Cauldron was the first Disney animated movie to be PG, and is also on Disney+If I recall correctly, The Black Hole was Disney's first film to receive a PG rating.

That was one of the few movies I was ever tempted to walk out on...if it weren't for the investment in concessions I would have.
I agree, though how much work it would take to get rid of the slop and leave themselves a better script/movie is also a bit scary. I think the styling was intentionally retro, patterned after movies like Forbidden Planet.It seems very outdated compared to a movie like Star Wars.
I never thought The Black Hole was a very good movie, but I still plan to rewatch it, too.
BTW, the remake is called Event Horizon. It's not great, either.

I had the 'The Black Hole' lunch box as a kid. I don't remember why I wanted it. Maybe because it had pictures of robots on it. I'm pretty sure I didn't see the movie until it made it's way to tv.
The lunch box is long gone but I still have the thermos (without lid). It was in the back of my parents kitchen cabinet for years. They were going to throw it out a few years ago but I kept it for some reason. I have no idea why.

This was the first thing I watched on Disney + after the Manalorian premiere. I hadn't seen it since the '80s (I saw it on opening night in the theaters).
The effects hold up pretty well, and the story is basically 20,000 leagues under the sea except set in space.
For the time it had some pretty big names in the cast.

Saw this when I was a kid. I had some models I built of the robots and ship... I don't remember too much about the plot though.
Black Hole score is incredible as well.
I hated it. A waste of my time. Gave it a 2/10 rating on IMDB.
The Black Hole still hasn't had a Blu-Ray release or a proper remastering. But it's been on digital for a while, and I rented it a few years ago. Whatever nostalgic fondness I had for TBH died when I re -watched it. Not even the vfx stand up, it has some of the worst blue screen ever committed to film.
I built the models too, I was crazy for it when I was ten y.o..Saw this when I was a kid. I had some models I built of the robots and ship... I don't remember too much about the plot though.
The main theme is catchy, but I got sick of that cheesy hero theme and the rest in mind-numbingly repetitive. And I love John Barry's stuff too, just can't live TBH.Black Hole score is incredible as well.
Loved it as a kid. Saw it a few years ago on demand on Dish and....well, let's just say I didn't love it as much. Some really corny stuff going on at times. But, I like the score and the effects were really good for the time. I read something years ago about the camera system created specifically for this movie.

I know that several years ago Joseph Kosinski was working on a remake after his success with Tron: Legacy. But I also expect that since Star Wars is now in-house at Disney, they aren't as excited about another Sci-Fi property.It's been a few years, but I did see some news about a remake. I don't think it got very far, though.
I find The Black Hole very interesting for a lot of reasons, but it's not a very good movie, and VINCENT and BOB are so far down the kids toy spectrum especially with the fact their "high tech" eyes failed in preproduction and they just have stickers there. It's also interesting that it was one vestiges of the old Hollywood studio system.

IIRC, this was Disney's first attempt at big special effects that were introduced with the first Star Wars movie. Another one that came out at the time was Firefox with Clint Eastwood. They both relied more on special effects than a quality plot.

I'm surprised the comparisons to Event Horizon and Star Wars, as I don't recall it being remotely similar to either one of those. It was primarily a film about piracy, murder, and an obsessed mad scientist. Only at the end of the film does the crew actually go through the black hole and we have some supernatural imagery.
I'm looking forward to watching it again.
