Dish is sure pushing the Edge.

I keep getting emails for the TiVo Edge. I have the Roamio OTA and was wondering what is different between the Roamio OTA and the Edge OTA. Both have 2 tuners.

Smaller hard drive size (2.5” vs 3.5”) limiting you to notebook hard drive replacements. Faster processor, and the edge only runs the new experience software.

I’m also of the opinion that the Roamio OTA was the last version with a decent tuner. But someone can correct me if I’ve gotten something wrong.

I suspect the hardware isn’t selling very well. I’m getting ready to offload most of my TiVo hardware as I pretty much stream everything these days.

All the Roamio's have at least 4 tuners.

The Cable version has 6.

Then it sounds like you don't have a Roamio they have 4 or 6 tuners not two.

Right. The last TiVo with just 2 tuners was the OTA-/cable-capable 2-tuner Premiere, the series prior to the release of the Roamio. (Series 4 vs Series 5)
I have Dish and a TiVo. I only record OTA with my TiVo and never paid any attention to how many tuners that it had. I only record off the 4 major networks and not any of the sub channels. I was just curious what the edge had that the Roamio OTA did not have. It looks like it has nothing to interest me. Thanks for your input.

You do realize your Hopper can record OTA and integrated it into the Hopper guide if you get the USB tuner and plug it in, right? Why go to the trouble and expense of a Tivo? And why is Dish hawking Tivos? Nothing in this thread makes any sense to me.

My emails are from TiVo, Not DISH. I like commercial skip, which Dish has sold out to the networks for money. I actually have a USB OTA tuner for my Hopper, but do not even have it connected. I like TiVos and have had one even before I had Dish. I have had a TiVo since 2001, when I joined this forum.
If the emails are not from Dish, can you please explain your thread title, “Dish is sure pushing the Edge”?

Well as mentioned the Roamio OTA has 4 tuners, not 2. Would not bother with an Edge myself, only improvement MIGHT be speed for streaming (and the 2.5" drive in Edge as compared to Roamio 3.5 is a huge detriment IMO, not to mention TE4 OS only as compared to TE3 or TE4 for Roamio.) If just using to record shows to the DVR/drive the Roamio should be nearly as good. Don't need the 4K if not streaming, there are no 4K OTA broadcasts on ATSC 1.0, the few available on ATSC 3.0 can't be "got" on any Tivo since the tuners are not ATSC 3.0.

Don't know what you mean about Dish "selling out" commercial skip to networks? Like it was their technology and they sold the tech to others? Not sure who developed commercial skip to begin with, maybe Replay TV? Not sure if it is a patented thing or if so, if the patent is still valid.

Dish used to have commercial skip on everything, then apparently scaled it back after threats from the networks. It was the whole reason for the name "Hopper", which jumps over commercials. Since Tivo is not a content provider like Dish, they're more immune to such threats.

It's been several years since I had Dish, so I could be working off old info. But in my experience they're the most pro-consumer provider out there, holding firm against most threats and price increases from networks. In the years I had Dish, their OTA USB tuner worked flawlessly, and I was able to skip commercials. I guess that changed after I left.

Like everything with Charlie, the commercial skipping was a bargaining chip. He used it to get better retrans deals from the networks. You can still use autohop, but, depending on the channel, the feature may not be available for a few days to a week after the original recording date. Dish is apparently coming out with a new box that is either android-based or has support for running android apps in order to support more streaming apps.

I went to the trouble myself years ago because the OTA content would eat up my Dish H3 HDD--although a generous 2TB given Dish's mostly MPEG-4 content (all MPEG-4 on the Eastern Arc), and I rarely DVR any SD content at MPEG-2 so less than 10 MPEG-2 SD recordings reside on the H3 HDD. Remember part of the 2TB HDD is reserved for VOD's and is not available for DVR recordings, but what is available for DVR recordings is still MASSIVE with MPEG-4 and a bit less than the full 2TB for recordings.

Yes, I already have several external HDD's for a massive amount of saved recordings (archived). I got great deals at Fleabay on Lifetime units with small HDD's and just upgraded the HDD's myself, and I also got great deals directly from TiVo over the years. I wanted DVR for when we have to leave MVPD's and the TiVo's offer great number of tuners for OTA and great storage capability for the OTA content we view. It may not make sense for everyone, but it makes sense for us.

And thanks to Dish and a subsequent court ruling, commercial skipping is now offered on more DVR type services than ever, including TiVo and those home network DVR's. Commercial Skipping was legal from DAY ONE, and the broadcasters knew it, but they had to try and fight and do SOMETHING. As each major network's contract ended, they renewed agreeing to drop the POINTLESS lawsuit, and accept Auto-hop, but they did impose the advertiser C3 or C7 delay on Auto-hop so the broadcasted could still get paid by the advertisers. After that, broadcasters don't get paid even if someone watches the recordings after that period, so nobody cares at that point.

However, the 9th Circuit's ruling on a preliminary injunction requested by the broadcasters denied by the trial court, but UPHELD by the 9th lays out how the 9th Circuit clearly sees such commercial skipping as LEGAL (or, at least, sees the broadcaster NOT prevailing in their suits), and provides the confidence for others to implement such commercial skipping features.
