I am getting ready to switch from cable to Dish Network and am
considering cancelling my Tivo Plus service and going with the
Dish DVR. I have a Toshiba RS-TX20 Tivo / DVD Recorder Combo
unit that comes with lifetime Tivo Basic service so I would not be
losing all functionality of the unit. I do enjoy the Season Pass and
Amazon Unbox capabilities of the Tivo, but I'm not sure it is worth
the $13+ a month vs. only $6 for the Dish DVR. Anyone who has
made the switch from Tivo to Dish DVR, let me know if you regret
it or you are happier with Dish. Thanks.

If you're going to do business with a patent infringing, intellectual property stealing company with no sense of right and wrong, you may as well go all the way.

Just hope that the courts don't decide to turn your shiny new DVR off.

This is a tivo forum. It's not the best place to find out about dish dvr's.

Having only tivo basic, it should be a step up, even if it's just a step to a generic dvr.

I suppose I should have originally asked for opinions from those who have both Dish DVR and Tivo since those who have switched to Dish DVR would probably not be interested in this forum. Anyway, If you have a valid opinion one way or the other, I'd like to hear it. I have not cancelled my Tivo Plus service yet, just trying to weigh my options.

If you are going HD with satellite there really isn't any option, you have to use the satellite company DVR if you want to record HD shows in HD. The current Dish HD DVRs (VIP622 & VIP722) generally get very good ratings however I have not used them.

If you are not going HD then TiVo is still an acceptable option. I do not have dishnetwork's current SD DVR (I believe it is a 625) but my old 510 works ok not as nice as TiVo and certainly not as many features but it records and plays back shows just fine. The current dish 625? DVR is a dual tuner model and seems to get ok to mediocre ratings and costs $6/mo.

The fact that your TiVo retains basic service if you cancel the premium service does make getting the Dish DVR seem like the reasonable thing to do.

I've been a longtime TiVo user and just moved into a Charter cable community and from what I've heard about them, I am definitely looking into alternatives.

A coworker mentioned that Dish had more HD channels than DirecTV, and was considering Dish. Your comment, GoHokies, gives me pause. I have been away from these forums for a long time and have no experience with Dish. Can you tell me about or point me to some information on these accusations? I really have no idea what you are talking about.

As for the OP, id switch to dish in a heartbeat if i could. I dont have line of sight though. They have way more HD channels. Their New vip722 DVR smokes. I just saw it at my cousins house. It can do like 55 hours of HD recording and its supports external Hard drive as well. It also allows you to have a second TV hooked up to it, but only standard definition. You can view the HD recordings downconverted though. It was pretty nice. I was jealous of it and all his fricking HD channels. Im on comcast and dont get near the offerings Dish has. Right now cable has dropped the ball on HD. All of my friends have made the leap to directv or dish. Unfortunately for me, i cant get either. The tivo is a better dvr, but all of them HD channels should make the decision quite easy.

I have Dish and have both the 622 and a S2 tivo. The 622 is a great DVR, it has not missed one recording (other than conflict resolution) and has yet to crash. Like the 722, you can expand the capacity with an external drive, but you have to pay $40 to activate the external storage! (although that activates it on all the 622/722s on your account). My only real gripe about the 622/722 is the fact that it does not maintain the live tv buffer if you start watching something you have recorded. Its not horribly annoying, but there are times when I'll come out of a recording and the show that is live lookings interesting and I think its my tivo and try and rewind only to realize I can't. Not a huge deal, more of an annoyance. The only other gripe, which is very specific to my situation, is the lack of being able to play from the live tv buffer within ~8 seconds or less of live tv. I watch a lot of hockey (I buy the Center Ice package every season) and often I would rather listen to the radio commentators than the tv commentators. Since I have XM, I often tuen my XM to whichever radio play-by-play I want to listen to, then use the DVR to get the TV feed in sync. However, if the radio is delayed by less than 10 seconds, it is useless. When you get within less than 10 seconds, it jumps to live tv. Anyways, annoys me, but I doubt anyone else. While I miss my tivo on my living room tv (HD), the 622 is adequate. However, if DISH (or possibly DirecTV) ever offered an HD Tivo that got all the channels (not the mpeg 2 directivo), I would get it in a heartbeat.

I switched and it was the WORST idea i did..my husband and I hate it its not a friendly machine,,very confusing.... i wish i never quit direct tv and my tivo....

i was told it was better then tivo,,its not even close

+1, after seeing his Tivo = AOL thread, I think he's just a troll. And trolls gets Dish DVR's, ... disabled Dish DVR's to be exact.

I wouldn't usually wish that on anyone, knowing how attached to my Tivo I am.

However, yeah, after the Tivo=AOL thread and the "You must own Tivo stock" comment inside, troll/malcontent/stock pusher seems to be the best bet and I'm prepared to make an exception for him.

That's the thing, dude! It isn't the truth, and couldn't be farther from the truth.

I'm glad that you're happy with your DVR and comfortable with the fact that your money is going to thieves and your DVR may be turned off via court order because it it. However, the additional features that a Tivo adds are actually worth the money, unlike the additional "features" added by AOL for people that were to stupid to use the real internet.

I would find this result to be highly unlikely, of course anything "might" happen heck I might even win the lottery without even buying a ticket. But lets just say it does happen then what? The DVR he paid nothing for with monthly service at less than 1/2 the cost of TiVos monthly service will no longer work. Doesn't seem like much of a risk to me.
