Discovery Channel in HD starting 8/13...maybe?

Starting Monday 8/13 with a 10PM Dirty Jobs and then most of the upcoming prime time hours for the regular Discovery Channel (including Wednesday's new Mythbusters Viewer Special) programs are tagged with HD.

I guess this could be guide data error in preparation for the launch of a new separate HD channel in the future. Or it's an HD simulcast on the same channel. Can't wait to find out for sure!

Isn't there already a Discovery HD channel?

Discovery HD Theater is different from Discovery Channel; Discovery Communications is also planning an HD launch of Discovery Channel.

really??

Interesting. I thought the Discovery HD Theater was essentially the HD version of Discovery channel, showing regular Dicovery channel shows shot in HD in HD, then filling in the rest of time with other content.

Discovery HD Theater does show a "sampling" of shows from Discovery Communications channels (Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, The Military Channel, etc.) but it is programmed independently from those channels. The shows that they do carry from the other Discovery networks are usually considerably delayed from their original airdate.

Discovery Channel HD, on the other hand, will be a simulcast of Discovery Channel, with those programs that are available in HD broadcast in HD, and those that aren't will be broadcast in TNT-like "stretchovision" (I believe).

Animal Planet, TLC, and The Science Channel are also due for fall launches in HD; two more will follow in 2008 (Military Channel and Discovery Health, my guess, although BBC America HD could be a remote chance, given the amount of HD material they can get from BBC).

Ewwwww.....

Why do they do that? Why not just skip the non-HD stuff and fill it with other HD stuff, even if it's repeats of stuff shown not too long ago.

I thought TNT was conisdered a joke when it comes to HD. If Discovery does like they do, they too will be a joke.

The problems with TNT HD stem partially from TNT themselves, with their penchant for dropping additional commercial breaks into shows in very awkward and inopportune times. Another problem is that TNT often cannot (or won't) get a hold of the HD version of material, and instead will broadcast the upconverted, stretched version of the material. Neither of these should be an issue with Discovery Channel HD.

And yeah, the stretch-o-vision is annoying, but TNT decided that Joe Sixpack didn't like pillarboxing (apparently the idiotic mindset that pillarboxing somehow "wastes" the widescreen format).

.
But not every show shown on Discovery is shot in HD. So, if they simply siumlcast the regular HD, they will have to upconvert some shows.

To me, this doesn't seem to be the best way to showcase HD. If you have a cable/satellite channel that claims to be HD, you should be able to flip to it at any time day or night and see actual HD.
TNT did a good job with the golf over the last week, but then CBS was the network carrying it and they have all golf cameras in HD.

As far as Discovery, we (DishNetwork) are scheduled to get it (with 9 other HD channels) starting on the 15th (Wednesday). It looks like Dirty Jobs is recorded in HD and I would think Mythbusters ( the two shows I like off Discovery) but I don't remember Mythbusters in the 16:9 format.

Just over on DBS talk and it looks like a few more to be introduced in Sept., CNN HD was mentioned as was another. I had seen that DirectTV had announced CNN and was hoping that Dish would get it soon, so I guess that one is coming true. Now the big ones are USA and the Travel Channel.
What I would prefer to see from Discovery Channel HD is that they simulcast the same programming as is on the Discovery Channel. If it is an HD version, show it in HD. If it is not an HD version, then show it in 4:3 mode with pillar boxes (as our local news channel does - most (all?) of their locally shot stories are shot in HD, with the canned footage they get from elsewhere being pillarboxed).

The big thing would be - have the program guide correctly identifying which programs are actually HD! If they are going the "stretch-o-vision" route, please don't list the stretched programs in the guide as HD. Nothing more disappointing than recording an "HD" version of a program only to have it be the old stretch-o-vision garbage.
