How many have there been?

The series1 seemed to start at 3.0 and are at 3.5b

The series 2 seemed to start at 3.1, skip 4 and 5, then 6.1 until 6.3e

Was this the progression or am I mis remembering?

That's about right. The R10 DVR had v6.1 software while the other Series 2 Tivo's had v6.2, until they both migrated to the current 6.3e.

Why do you care?

I also throw my hat in the ring so to say, wondering why it matters. The only thing that should matter is what the current software versions are.

I was just interested. I had a friend who's Series 2 was still on 3.1 because it had never been plugged into a phone jack. I am starting to think of all the little glitches over the years could have been avoided by just simply not letting the DiredTivo's update.

I completely agree with your last statement. Haven't had my zippered units plugged into a phoneline for the past 2 years. I haven't had a single problem with either of my DTivo's, even during the Daylight Savings time goof that some had to deal with.
