hi i have direct tv with tivo in my basement rec room. i want to run it upstairs since i now have locals and cancel cable.

i have the 3 Lnb sat with 4 out put but only two cables coming in. i bought a terk powered multi switch modle msp-34 3x4.

when i first fired up tivo to run programming with it pluged in (multi switch) it told me even though i had signal that it couldnt find the satalites.

so what do i do to run tivo upstairs to my other tv?

run two cables directly to the dish( thru ground connector) the dish has built in connector multi-switch. if you don't want to do it yourself call Directv and complain nicely that the installer did not complete the job. He did not install the wiring to your living room.

Whenever an installer puts in the 3LNB or 5LNB dish they must run all four lines into the house, regardless of current need.

These should be run to a common location where they are then distributed. If a multiswitch is needed in the future, then it would be installed there.

yeah thing is i put it in all my by self and its 250 ft of line away.... cant i use the pliter and one cable upstairs to the plain box?

If all you need are channels from the 101 satellite then you can connect TWO lines to the 3x4 and this will give you four outputs. But, as I said these outputs will only have the 101 sat channels. You can't use a normal splitter on a sat line.

I don't think at 250 ft of line......you might not get the receivers to see the satellite. That means, you have to have solid copper core RG6s. Or an power multiswitch.

Yeah, 250ft is a long way. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but when I had these same problems, I was told that the issue isn't necessarily getting the signal from the dish to the receiver, rather it is getting the 5V signal from the receiver to the dish. There's a larger voltage drop over 250ft of wire, and a low voltage like 5V doesn't allow much room for losses over that distance.

My dish sits about 100ft from my house. I've installed a powered 4x8 multiswitch right were the cable enters the house. From that location I've split out to various receivers in the house. These second cable runs to the receivers vary between 30 and 75ft.

Prior to installing the multi-switch, I had RG6 installed everywhere. I got single at all of my receivers, but it was VERY temperamental. When I installed the new multiswitch, I also replaced the 4 100ft cable runs from my dish to my house with RG12. Ever since I installed the powered multiswitch and RG12, my signal has improved drastically.

Since I had problems at 175ft, it's not surprise (to me at least) that you're having signal issues at 250ft. It's probably not what you want to hear. I know when I began my own project, replacing the cable and installing the multiswitch was a much larger project then I was looking for. Of course, it might be quite easy depending on how things are laid out at your home.
