Copy hard drive to put in same model TiVo

I have a TiVo Premiere XL. Long ago got a 2TB drive in it. It has life time sub and I want to sell it to my friend.

But have a lot of videos on it that I put on from my computer that are home videos.

I DD copied it to another 2TB drive and it works in the same TiVo. I have the same Premiere XL but with out life time. I put the hard drive in there and it boots up but then there is no my shows it's like it deletes them all.

I did see it said life time but then it changed. I think after I rebooted it. But a menu of my shows don't even come up.

Is there a way I can get this to work in the same model TiVo with out a life time sub?

No, the hard drive is encoded to the specific Tivo box by the service number. it must be transferred to another box and must have service Subscription on both.
Just to add,
You can use a drive from one Tivo to another of the exact same model, but you need to marry the drive to the new unit since the encryption chip is different and the only way to do that is to perform a C&DE (Clear and delete everything) and that would include the recordings.

So yes you can move the drive, but not the recordings, you can however offload them from the initial Tivo with pyTivo or KMTTG to a computer.

You could activate the unsubscribed Tivo on your account with the lifetime Tivo, then transfer the shows from the lifetime tivo to the second Tivo and finally cancel the service on the second Tivo within 30 days and you won't be charged a fee. You can then still watch the transferred shows on the unsubscribed Tivo.

Thank you I did activate the unsubscribed Tivo and connected it 2 times the 2nd time it worked. The 1st time did not say the name I gave it but said account in good standings.

I set up a lot of recordings to copy to this new 2TB drive that because it deleted all the videos I set it back to factory defaults.

Have to pick one by one to transfer them. Some I had pause and to get it to transfer from the start I have to play then and right away press back then it will transfer the hole video.

Set it up to do a lot but I have to go to work soon and so will see if I can set up the rest another time.

It said will cost $14.95 a month even though I have 4 life time TiVo's here did not gave me a discount and I log in to my TiVo account.

Thank you.

There is no longer any Multi-service discounts.
