My old tivo's hard drive died last summer, and since then it's been sitting in the basement. I was wondering today if it would be possible to use the tivo hardware (with a new hard drive) to create a music server.

I don't like tivo's home media option, so I don't care about the tivo software. I'm just trying to figure out if I could put that old box to good use. Plus, it would look nicer than a PC sitting in my living room, and I'm kind of shallow that way.

Has anyone done something like this? What OS and software did you use, and were you able to get a remote control to work? And, how did you do it?

Thanks!

I never tried. The video circuits will still be sucking power, and I'd have to dink around building Linux for it.
Instead, I got a Linksys NSLU2 NAS. It uses much less power, and its Linux is more powerful and flexible than TiVo's.
