Hi Everybody!

I am a totally blind TiVo user. I have recorded some TV shows that I would like to transfer off my TiVo DVR, a 1 TB Bolt running experience 4, to MP3 files on my Windows PC that I can use on my media player, a Victor Reader Trek by Humanware.

What would be the simplest and easiest way to accomplish this?

Thanks! Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

Most of us hasn't had the experience of converting to mp3, but to mp4 which is a compressed video file MPEG4.

Hi again! I'm back!

Actually, all I need is a simple and easy to use way to transfer the recordings from my DVR to my PC. The format they transfer in doesn't matter too much as long as its a common format such as mp4.

After the recordings are on my PC, I believe my audio editor, Gold Wave, can extract the audio stream from the video stream and save it to a file in a chosen format such as WAV or MP3.

I am not opposed to using something like KMTTG as long as it doesn't require a computer science degree to use it.

You could use KMTTG to download the shows and decrypt and the end file would me .MPG. Then you can use anything to do whatever you like on it.

Without decryption, it will be a .tivo file and is harder for programs to handle it.

Well, I'll definitely want decryption, I'll want the file in an unprotected format because my media player doesn't support any kind of content protection except for the free audio books I get from the National Library Service.

Hi again!

I notice that KMTTG is in Java, which I don't normally have installed because of serious security problems with it in the past. By now I'm sure that Oracle has resolved those issues, but since it didn't seem like I even needed Java, I chose not to reinstall it.

I am willing to install it temporarily so I can run KMTTG to do these transfers. However there seems to be a problem, Oracle's site makes no mention of Edge, it's either Internet Explorer (which happens to be my all time favorite browser) or Firefox (the one browser I truly do not like). Is Java even usable from Edge? I see numerous web sites that say that since Edge no longer supports plug ins that Java cannot be run from it.

So do I need to reinstall Internet Explorer to use KMTTG? Or is there an alternative that doesn't require Java?

Thanks!

Hmm... I'm not opposed to installing Java if KMTTG is better or easier to use than PyTivo Desktop.

Does anyone know if Java can be used with the Chromium editions of Edge? I know the legacy version didn't support plug-ins or add-ons or extensions so Java can't be run from it, but I know that Chromium does have an extensions systems, so I'm thinking that the Chromium editions of Edge does support Java.

Oops! My mistake! I should have said "PyTivo Desktop" instead of just "PyTivo". But yes, in my previous message I was referring to PyTivo Desktop.

Sorry about that...

Thanks!

Is there a portable version of PyTivo? (Or at least one that doesn't require an installer)

Thanks!
No. pyTivo Desktop is not just one executable. There are 3 main executables, the UI, the tray app, and pyTivo itself. Plus there are auxiliary executables like ffmpeg & tivolibre, and on Windows some registry keys that need to be set for your MAK. There is no way to make an installer-less version.

Yes, KMTTG requires java. There are different versions of java for different operating systems.

KMTTG is a .jar java file and you run it by javaw.exe "-jar kmttg.jar" and include the path where javaw.exe is. A shortcut is easy to have.

OK, I have installed PyTiVo Desktop and have it set up so that I can now see my list of recorded shows. But when I choose the one show that I want to transfer to my PC, then click the "download all" button to download all the show's episodes, the only thing that happens is that the episodes are added to the transfer cue, then nothing. PyTiVo is running in the background as it is supposed to.

So what now? Isn't there any way to see the transfer cue or to see the status of the transfer or to start the transfer itself??

Help! Thanks!

If you click the queue button it should show. Each episode should download one by one with a progress bar showing for the top most one on the list. If you don't see the progress bar than something failed.

This can sometimes happen because of the TiVo itself, so the first thing I'd do is close the pyTivo UI. Exit the tray app. Then go to the TiVo and reboot it as well. When the TiVo is back up for at least 2 minutes restart pyTivo. This time try downloading just one episode first. If that still fails then immediately go to the About dialog and click view log. Paste the error here, if there is one, and I might be able to help.

In PyTivo Desktop, with each show, there is a download icon on the far right side of each row (unless its a folder).
