Convert .Avi to play on Tivo

I need to convert .Avi files to play on my Tivo.
I have done a search and found a couple of possibilities but thought that I might get the benefit of someone else's experience.
Free or shareware is preferred.
Thank you

All I can Say is one word:

PyTivo.

It can transfer .avi, .mkv, mpg, .mp4 and some others. With TiVo Desktop, you would need the $25 Plus option.

I use ffmpeg and x264 (both free) to convert .??? to (TiVo compatible) .mp4 files. An ffmpeg example "recipe" is included in that link to help get you started.
Since everyone else piped up...

I use meGUI to accomplish that and many other video rework tasks.
I recommend pyTivo but you can also drag the AVI file to the Tivo device section of Vuze and it will convert it to a VOB and make it available for download in the Tivo Now Playing List menu.
