Last night while we were asleep, the TiVo S2 in our bedroom woke us up because the front panel light suddenly turned on very brightly (the GF likes it off, since even the faintest light bugs her when sleeping). We covered up the light and went back to sleep.

The next morning, we turned on the TV and found it in "Powering up" mode. It went into "Just a few minutes more" mode, then restarted again into "Powering up" mode.

I found a thread on the official TiVo Support Forum which recommends watching for the green power light to turn yellow, at which point you press Pause and "57" (I've also read that there is a "52" code which can be even more drastic a measure). I got the "Green Screen of Death" (GSOD, which I get the impression is actually a good thing in this situation), which says it will take three hours to fix the problem.

The GSOD implies that it will be on the screen for those three hours (since it warns you to turn off your TV to prevent burn-in). However, her TiVo is still restarting itself, though it does go back to the GSOD again each time. (My own TiVo is in the family room, and it's fine... for now.)

Is this normal GSOD behavior, or should the GSOD be on the screen for all three hours? Is our TiVo hosed? Should I try the "52" fix?

If we need a new hard drive, what kind is recommended? Make, model, capacity? Are there any to avoid which the TiVo would have compatibility issues with?

We had to order a hard drive replacement/upgrade from WeaKnees.com. Apparently, the original hard drive was beyond the ability of the TiVo to repair.

All things considered, it worked out rather well. We went from a 40-hour box to 86, and it was not expensive.

I had the same thing happen ("The next morning, we turned on the TV and found it in "Powering up" mode. It went into "Just a few minutes more" mode, then restarted again into "Powering up" mode") and it kept happening over and over again, so I unplugged the unit and then plugged it back in. Now, I hear a noise like a fan running when I plug it back in (because I have tried to unplug and replug it back in to the power supply many times) but there are NO lights, no activity whatsoever. Is there anything I can do? What about retrieving any season pass info or shows on the unit? PLEASE HELP!!
