one of the noisiest drives I have heard

For 750GB drives available now, wd7500aaks would be my top choice.

Why the WD at top choice?

I just put one in an external enclosure after enabling AM, so I have one. but I also have a Seagate DB35 drive.

Is it just price/bang for the buck?

Yes. The price difference between Seagate DB35 and WD is not worth the 2 additional years of warranty, in my opinion. Also, Seagate charges $20 for advance replacement, and WD charges $0.

All of my TiVos have WD drives. All of my PCs have Seagate drives, where noise is less of an issue.

I believe it's top choice because of the $ value w/ AAM. For quite on Seagate you got to pay the DB35 premium. My view point is why do it? The disk spinning 24/7 doesn't reduce life on drives, actually spin up and down are harder on the drives.

That said, the WD HDD mentioned is also $10 less expensive then the Seagate non DB35 that's being referenced by the OP.
