Well my 63 day old Elite just died. While watching a basketball game the screen would freeze for a second every 5 minutes or so. After an hour of this I heard a click! And the tv went dark and all lights on the TiVo went out.

I unplugged it for a few minutes, plugged it in and nothing. Not even the fan. it was plugged into a UPS so I plugged it directly into a wall outlet and still nothing.

TiVo have a replacement in the mail already.

I hope this was a freak incident. I own 3 S2s and have never had any problems.

Better that it happened on day 63 instead of day 93! ;)

$40 for 3 yrs. I've had two hard drive failures on two previous TiVos less than two years in. The drives I've put in have lasted longer.
It could have been a pop which sounds like I lost a capacitor.
I sprang for the extended warranty because it seemed like cheap insurance.

New TiVo due to arrive Thursday.
Sucks you lost all your shows though. :(

I purchased the 3 year warranty for my 4 units as well, but one thing that really bothers me: read the fine print - it says that you are entitled to a replacement of the unit during the warranty period, after which time the warranty contract automatically ends.

I've never seen this language in a warranty before. I originally purchased SquareTrade warranties for the Tivos, and I understand how those work. I cancelled the SquareTrade and switched to Tivo warranties because I have Lifetime subs on the Tivos. I was concerned that if I had a problem, SquareTrade would give me cash instead of a repaired unit and I'd end up losing my lifetime.

As it is with Tivo, you'll retain the lifetime sub, but will end the warranty prematurely if you have to use it... It goes without saying that if my Tivo needs replacing during the extended warranty period, I'll fight tooth and nail to not have them void the contract upon replacement.

I have not seen the whole document, but if it is as you show, I would believe this to mean that the "after which time" is referring to the 3 years, not the replacement, and that the replacement unit will not extend that warranty. I do not see how they could get out of covering you for an entire three years if they replace your unit (potentially with another bad one) two days in or something like that. On the other hand though, you could see them losing out a whole bunch if they had to replace your Tivo after two years, and then you got another three years on the replacement.

Just my two cents and how I interpret the warranty language.

Scooter, this is from the Tivo website. Unfortunately, it's exceedingly clear:

3. LIMIT OF LIABILITY

Maximum liability under this Contract shall be the cost of: (I) one replacement with a Product of like grade and quality or (II) reimbursement of the retail price paid for the products minus the sales tax. This Contract provides for only the one-time replacement of the Product with another Product of like grade and quality. This Contract will expire at the time of this replacement or reimbursement for replacement or term expiration and the covered Product becomes the property of Service Net and We may, at Our discretion, require the Product to be returned to Us (or Our designee) at Our expense. Service Net reserves the right to replace the Product with a remanufactured or refurbished Product.

Ahhhh, yes indeed. That language is clear as glass! That is indeed unfortunate. I guess this is why this particular contract is so reasonably priced. Luckily I think it's a rare occasion where you would need a total replacement once let alone twice. Especially for such a catastrophic failure as the op suffered.
FYI - my replacement was covered under the 90 day warranty so my extenended warranty is still intact.

Same here I used the extended warranty the the box sent to replace the broken one had only the standard 90 day warranty even though it was the 2nd year of three when the first box failed.
