claims to be "far superior to instant cake"....True?

I am looking to repair/upgrade my Series 3 Tivo (TCD648250B). I see an ebay auction for someone selling what appears to be a TiVo upgrade kit of some kind (ebay item #220921578660).

A statement in the auction claims its "far superior to instant cake". I'm trying to figure out if this is actual software included or if they are simply giving you instructions on how to maybe use free stuff out there (like WinMFS). I'm thinking probably the later, but figured I would ask here to see if anyone is familiar with this seller/product. Their rating is 100% positive feedback so while they might be legit, I'm just trying to figure out what they are exactly selling.

Just use winMFS if you already have a funtioning TiVo hard drive. If not then get intsant cake which has an image. They both work very well.

It does sound like he is selling "A bootable cdrom with the industry standard utilities.." and providing email support. The problem is the tools are not his to sell.

It's probably a boot disc with an old copy of MFS Tools.

And no actual TiVo images, so if you don't still have a good TiVo drive, it's worthless.

For the money..... I'd try grabbing another box on eBay or look for an image on the internet. Instancake is completely overpriced.

But it works quite well. If someone doesn't want to spend hours dealing with getting the right image and figuring out how to load it on a drive, InstantCake is for them.

I think I'd prefer to look for the right one on the internet than to pay $40 to Weakness (formerly DVRUpgrade). At $20 ... there was value there... at $40.... it's just robbery.

I didn't realize it was so much now. I purchased instantcake five times in the past and was very pleased with the results. But it was $20 for each one I purchased between 2007 and 2009, $40 does seem a little steep.
$20 for each image wasn't bad for me to image my old boxes, with the current software, that I was giving to some friends.

False, the seller is not making that claim. The statement is from a buyer that is merely giving an opinion.

What he actually said

"A statement in the auction claims its "far superior to instant cake". "

It is a statement in the auction. You inferred something which the OP did not imply.

The OP did neglect the apostrophe in the contraction of "it is".

But isn't this the ONLY legal way to get a fresh Tivo image to use on a Tivo you already own?

I know this sounds like I'm contradicting what I just said, but were they different versions of hardware? Couldn't you reuse the existing InstantCake you had?

(I do think $40 is a bit steep..)

There were three different hardware versions and then a couple were to get the lasted software.

Why would spend any money to get the latest software as the TiVo will update itself to the latest software on the third call home.

Instant Cake may not always be the latest version of the software for whichever model you got that verison of it.

But it'll let you get the thing running and then it can download the latest version from the mothership.

Instant Cake is actually designed to put the image on a larger drive.

Which you can do yourself if your original drive is still working, or you can get the image from someone else, but for some people IC is more convenient and less intimidating, and provides instant gratification.

Of course if you're an impoverished control freak like me...

Most of these were DirecTV TiVos.
I wasn't using DirecTV any more and wasn't subscribed to it. The most I was willing to do was connect the boxes up to my old DirecTV feed and make sure they could get a signal on the main bird. And I wanted to make sure it was up to date before I gave them to my firends since I didn't want to have to touch them again after I gave it to them. I only charged my friends the cost of the Instant cake, and gave them the TiVo boxes with expanded hard drives for free.
