Charlie's Angels Reboot 9/22/11

Wow, this was even worse than I thought it could be.

The original Angels were likable in that they were stuck in jobs because they were women, and Charlie took them away from all that.

Now they are convicted criminals who work for Charlie. I can't root for them like I could the originals.

Bosley is no longer the older sage, he is a young 'stud'. Doesn't work for me. Bosley needs to impart wisdom, he shouldn't be a twenty-something kid.

And the voice of Charlie. Ugh. John Forsythe as the original had such a distinctive voice that if you heard it anywhere you would know it. The current voice is so non-descript it is boring.

Add these issues to unbelievable technology (really, a spy satellite that can view into hotel rooms?) and it is a dud for me.

I vote this one as the first new series that is cut short.

Oddly enough, the role of Charlie is still uncast. Robert Wagner did the pilot (not sure if that's what aired this week), and they're currently "in final talks" with Victor Garber to replace him. Which means at the moment, they don't have a Charlie.

I watched the first few minutes, and was so appalled I switched over to Big Bang Theory (which, if you followed those threads last season, you'll know I am highly disillusioned with). I've been waiting for a thread to see if it got any better after the first five minutes.
I was curious to see what people thought about... I wasn't around for the original series and the peices I saw of the trainwreck movies (sorry, even the hotness involved couldn't make me sit through either one of them) did not endear me to the series, but I figured if it's gonna get a reboot maybe it'll be something I could get into (ass kicking chicks are hot). After watching a couple of trailers and commercials for it, I actually didn't believe it was real. Based on what I saw, no amount of hot-chick ass kickery would make me spend even a second of my free time on it.

But I wanted to see user reviews because I'm curious... One thing I'll say is that I don't think it should be judged against the original series like the OP is doing... it's not the same show, it's a version of that show, so you can't compare story elements between the two (I mean you CAN I guess, I'm just saying they're two different entities.

Anyway I think the campiness of the original in it's time was what gave it it's "charm" if you will. There's no place for that now... Every time I see the movies on TV I try to figure out how the hell they were such massive successes because they really are among the worst movies I've ever seen. And if the show wanted to do something different the should try to focus on actually having legit stories and legit acting, along with the "hot chick ass kickery" angle.

I guess I'm in the minority---I enjoyed it. It's fun and entertaining. I was also surprised that they turned the Angels into felons, but they seem to have moved on from that life. I guess it's just television's payback for making the original TV Nikita innocent instead of a murderer...

So far I've only given up on 2 shows (Free Agents and A Gifted Man)...
The voice of Charlie was definitely Victor Garber this week. I watched the whole thing, but was pretty unimpressed. Not going to waste another hour on it.
OMG how did that blonde woman get cast in this show?
She is enuf to get me to never watch it again.

I always liked Minka Kelly but ouch.

Bosley being a stud - yikes.
Predictable all show, no go. Perfect for those that want their eye candy unencumbered by plot, cleverness or even rational though. The CSI Miami/NCIS LA viewer will probably love it.
I never really liked the original series, and had nothing good to say about the movie versions but I am a fan of the "butt kicking femme fatales" genre of action tv/movies so I figured this was worth a try... 3rd time's the charm, right? Wrong... this was so bad on so many levels that I'm left baffled as to how it actually got on the fall schedule.

I thought perhaps I'd watch a second episode to see if it improved, but I can't bring myself to do it. At least I still have Nikita (that show really has gotten much better since it's premiere last year).
I watched a few more minutes, and that was enough. It felt like it was directed by a veteran of bad 70s sitcoms...static shots of people standing around tossing lines (badly) past each other.

Which is really not the vibe you want for an action show.
The good news is, this is the best show I've seen so far this season.

The bad news is, THAT is the best show I've seen so far this season?

This is going to be a looong season. :(
Thought it was horrible. I watched the full hour just to see if it would improve but it didn't. Bad acting, bad dialogue ("I never knew my heart could hurt so much"), bad writing. The only thing I liked was Minka Kelly. This was my first SP to be deleted.
Did not like this show at all! Wanted to like it, grew up on the original Angels. Has my vote as the first show to be cancelled!
I don't know---the network has invested a lot of time and money into the show. I think they're more likely to let it stay out there to try to find an audience...
This show might be ratings-proof, or have a bit of a ratings buffer. It seems to have a guaranteed ad buyer.

Drew Barrymore is listed as executive producer, and there were a ton of commercials with Drew Barrymore in them (Covergirl?)

Oh, and I almost turned it off during the scene after the car-bomb. That was painful.

I think she has some involvement in the rights dating back to the CA movie days...

Which is to say she might not have anything to do with the TV show except cashing her checks.

I believe she's credited as an executive producer on the new show.

My wife and I didn't care for it. She described it to her brother last night as:

Hot women, hot Bosley, hot cars, nice scenery, lots of action, bad acting.

We will give it one more shot probably. Unless it improves, we are out.
I figured the odds of this being good were so slim that I didn't bother looking at it. This thread seems to bear that out.

And I really liked Minka Kelly from watching her on Parenthood. Hope she returns to that when this series gets canceled.
