CBS using the "Thumbs up to record"

I was watching "The new adventures of old Christine" last night, and during promos for both "Kid Nation" and "Survivor", they had the "Thumbs up to record" function enabled.

VERY nice to see it again - I set SP for both using it.

I wish this was used more often.

Yep. Tim Rogers was interviewed in Sound & Vision magazine this month and said they has struck a new partnership deal with CBS.
That's great. I hope they make more of these deals.

Also, I use the 30-sec skip, but even the short time it takes between keypresses is enough for the TU icon to show, which made me stop and skip back so I could record. :)
I'd rate them slightly less obtrusive and tacky than the garbage TNT and some others constantly put at the bottom of the screen. At least the thumbs things only appear during ads (so far).
The last time Tivo used these, they locked my tivo up hard. When my Tivo hit these ads, I had to physically unplug my Tivo to restart it. This happened several times. Tivo users can look forward to unplugging their units many times in the future - All thanks to CBS and Tivo!! Yay!
yay for tivo-matic!
(it's been a long time since it was named that hasn't it?)

And I have never had it lock up one of my units, so YMMV

This has never happened to me on my Series 2 or 3.

Who's Tim? Tom's little bro?
I like the "TiVo-matic" because it's helpful but unobtrusive.

I've never had it do weird things to my Phillips DirecTiVo box in over 3.5 years. Until Sunday. It stayed on the screen for about 20 minutes through other commercials and the show. I had to exit the recording and go back in to reset it.

Was this during FOX programs?

I seem to remember FOX messing up the signal somehow a while ago.

Something in the compression that resulted in the thumb staying after the promo, or locking up everything.

Indeed. Simpsons if I recall correctly.
Hopefully CBS will not have the same problems - if this "feature" works correctly, then it would merely be a major annoyance, and not a major technical disaster. One can only hope, I guess.
Does anyone know how this technology works? I believe I have seen the thumb during a promo that was ran by the local affiliate and not CBS corporate and I know for the local promos we do nothing special to tag them for the Tivos to know it is such and such promo.

There were multiple times during AI (Taylor Hick's year I believe) in which the thumb would still be on the screen after the promos, for my tivo that is.
I recorded the CBS preview show this past week, and the "press thumbs up" thingee popped up on the screen during 2 of the previewed shows. I was able to create season passes with only a few button presses, then was returned to the show where I pressed the thumbs up. Pretty neat.

It would be a MAJOR annoyance? Really?

IIRC, a press of the Clear key would fix it.
You are correct. I have even used the clear key to correct those situations (however rare they are) where the icon remains "stuck" on the screen.
Incorrect. My machine was completely locked up - only an unplugging fixed the issue. As for it being a MAJOR annoyance - yes. For me, yes. For a few others, maybe not, but I like TV my way. Not the way sponsors want me to want TV. I'm funny that way - wanting TV my way.

It's data that's put in Line 21, same as the closed-captioning and ratings data. So if you're not stripping that data at some point before you air the promo, the "thumbs up to record" will be there.
