I'm sure the Evil Overlord's Handbook has an entry for when you've eliminated all your nemesis's clues to your identity, not giving her a new one by sending an assassin after her...

Ok, who didn't see the Captain kicking the bucket at some point now that he's announced his retirement to spend more time with his wife? :) I admit that I didn't see his involvement with the bad guys coming though.

Also, I hate "cliffhangers" like this. We know she's not going to die!
Well, the evil mastermind had no way of knowing how much Montgomery told Beckett...

I thought it was a pretty intense season finale---yes, of course we know Beckett lives, but it you step back from that and just watch the show...
Yeah, Montgomery's death was definitely telegraphed. I think the writers knew that the audience would have guessed he would be the one to die, so they spent more time playing around with making the audience guess the *how* rather than the *who*.

I didn't see Beckett getting shot at the end, though. That kind of surprised me.

It was kind of cool seeing the entire team in dress blues at the funeral, since you never see them in uniform.
Wow intense. Wonder if she will remember that Castle told her that he loved her..

And especially not at a public location where you just know there will be a hundred cops. How do you get a minion to volunteer for THAT job?

But then this would have taken place a couple of days or a week after Montgomery was killed so the packet of evidence that he put together should have come to light by that time. Of course none of the bad guys survived the shootout so who knows what is going through Evil Overlord's mind.
Not a bad finale, but the thing that kept bothering me during the episode was Castle's assumption that if Becket stopped looking for the big boss, that it would make her safer. I would think the default assumption would be that the guy is coming after Becket anyway, seeing as how he has systematically killed everyone else that might threaten him, and his hit man just broke out of jail. Of course, Castle's baseless assumption would have been correct, more or less, since Montgomery apparently had a deal with big boss to let Becket live if she backed off. Ironic.

Is the big boss going to turn out to be the mayor? Or someone else we have already heard of? Or will it be a new character? What did Montgomery do with that packet of evidence? It seemed like he was mailing it, but as someone pointed out already in this thread, if he did mail it, it should have surfaced before the funeral. If he mailed it to the newspapers or the D.A. or something, maybe the person turns out to be on big boss' payroll?

The sniper was obviously not experienced. He should have set up with the sun at his back.

I have a hunch the writers don't even know. This was just a way to "move the plot forward" without really changing anything.

That said, if true then I must admit this show is doing a better job of making it up as they go along than most shows that do that, probably because the "central mystery" is so peripheral to what makes the show work. In fact, I think it would be almost exactly the same show without the "central mystery."
Obviously Beckett's death was faked, to take the heat off her while she searches for the Big Bad.

Perhaps they'll bring her back -- but with someone other than Stana Katic temporarily playing the role because Beckett will have had plastic surgery to disguise herself. Who should they get? Jennifer Love Hewitt? Katee Sackoff? Summer Glau? Morena Baccarin? (She's available now that "V" has been cancelled.) :D
Kate's going to be fine, we all know that.

I'm curious to learn about the next captain of the 12th. I imagine he/she will be different from Montgomery. Possible dislike Castle hanging around. Or maybe a big fan of his books, and doesn't want him following Beckett around for fear he'll be hurt and stop writing.

The only thing that is certain is the new captain will have a different personality than Montgomery. If not, why get rid of Montgomery?

I don't think it was faked, unless Castle wasn't in on the plan.
Plus I thought I saw blood on her hand. Of course that could still be faked.

I suspect the actor left the show. Because there was certainly nothing wrong with the character...

I agree that the assumption that she'd be safe if she backed off was less than wise, but in all fairness, he was pointed that way by both Kate's Dad and the Capt.

As to the length of time the packet spent in the mail - I've recently had priority mail (2-3 day delivery) take 5, so anything's possible. Maybe it was returned for lack of sufficient postage?? Or maybe no one was really checking their mail at that juncture??

So - who have we heard of that's higher in the chain than Montgomery? The mayor is the only one who comes to my mind. And why in the nine hells didn't Kate and Montgomery play the arrival of the baddies smarter? One firing from hiding, perhaps, rather than hauling her out of the whole thing?

I found it intriguing that this was a real ensemble ep. Just about everyone got a huge emotional scene, which was GREAT.

Montgomery was one of the better cop bosses. Of course his death now gives the show an opportunity to present Castle with the need to prove his usefulness with the new captain. That could be interesting.
Maybe Esposito or Ryan will be promoted to Captain or are they too young?

Beckett would appear to have seniority, so if it would be any of the detectives, it would be her (assuming she survives, naturally). None of them seem to be the type to ride a desk, though.

It'll be interesting trying to write a new character as captain... the show seemed to be well cast across the board, so I hope introducing a character like that won't upset things too badly.

Was Montgomery the commander of the 12 precinct, or just of the homicide division?

I imagine there are more senior people that we don't know who can put in for the command. I imagine they will go with a leggy blonde to somehow get between Castle and Beckett now that Castle has professed his feelings.
They could bring in Lt. Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson) from "Law & Order: The Mothership." :D
