I don't know what caused the problem but I cannot playback any .tivo files using Windows Media Player 11 or Nero Show Time 3.2 since I upgraded to TiVo Desktop 2.5.

I can edit the files using VideoRedo so the MAK seems to be set properly.

I had to upgrade from TiVo Desktop 2.3 to 2.5 because the fall TiVo upgrade doesn't work with TiVo Desktop 2.3.

I tried selecting File / Set Media Access Key (which said it was already set) and entering the key again. Media Player and Nero still cannot play the files. This goes for .tivo files transfered before the fall upgrade and ones transfered after the fall upgrade.

What can I do to get Media Player and Nero Show Time to work again?

Same issue i've had since updating to 2.5...my laptop still has 2.3 and they play just fine...

From what i've been told..here on the forum...its a codec issue...but no suggestions that i have received have fixed the issue...

Please explain why I need a new codec for a video file that was transferred from a TiVo twelve months ago. The file hasn't changed since I was last able to view it.

Are you saying that upgrading TiVo Desktop to version 2.5 deletes or destroys working codecs?

The original TivoDirectShowFilter source filter provided a rather general and incomplete description of the stream it would generate so a number of codecs were willing to connect to it but then suffered from playback problems when they tried to process it for display. Newer versions of the same Tivo filter (installed by the newer distributions) provide a more complete and accurate description of those streams. As a result, some of the codecs that used to connect during the filter construction process are no longer willing to do so. If you don't have a codec that will participate, it won't playback.

The solution for Windows Media Player is described here:
http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=10345817&returnExpertiseCode=

As noted in the posting it is described in:
C:\Program Files\TiVo\Desktop\ReadMe.rtf
in the Known Problems section.

The codec is available with the "free" version of TivoToGo and WMP will use it with the Rendering option turned off.

Can someone tell me how to get Nero to use it?

This link to the post made by kentr6727 mentions that "* These steps apply to Windows Media Player 10. Other versions may require different steps."

The "different steps" that completed this fix for me was updating TiVo Desktop. Everything plays fine now with WMP 11 (11.0.5721.5230) after updating from TiVo Desktop v 2.2 to v 2.5.275381.

:) Ariela's solution also worked for me too.

Symptoms:

1. I too could not playback any TiVo videos after upgrades to TiVo Desktop 2.5... and WMP 11. Attempts had a black WMP screen plus a red X.

2. High CPU (90% plus) was being used by iexplore.exe.

What solved BOTH of these was to un-install Desktop AND WMP totally, restart, then install WMP 11, then the most recent Desktop -- 2.5.xxxx.

All is now well once again. Thanks for the words of wisdom.

Yeah!! I didn't have to reinstall WMP11, but did have to uninstall TiVo Desktop per their 2.5.xxx install instructions - just forgot to mention it. I'm so glad it worked for you. All we want to do it watch a little TV :)

This suggestion worked for me. I visited the link followed instructions and was able to watch my TiVo files on my computer.

I upgraded from 2.3a to 2.5.1 and using Windows Media Player 10 and could not watch any TiVo files.

Thank you for the link.
