I power off and on the Tivo. If I play with the pause button enough and entering 54 I can get to a screen that asks how to check the drive. It is not a full drive test but random sectors.

How do I get to the old hard drive test? ( I am getting S03 when trying to download program data.)

S03 is not a hard drive error.
its more of guide data removal timed out.
Are you holding Pause or tapping it? I think it needs to be held at the yellow blink.

This is an old series 2 with a dvd drive. There isn't any yellow blink.

It would be the remote light activity on the Tivo box, not the remote.
