First world problem. :)

But with newer smartphones and higher resolution cameras, it's pretty much now impossible for me to upload any image I take without first opening it in a photo editor and resampling it down to some [comparatively] small size.

Obviously larger images take up more space wherever they get stored here, so it's probably got to be limited somehow though it may be appropriate to still increase it somewhat over time as camera resolutions by default increase too, but if there were at least some way to allow the upload of a huge image and have it resampled/resolution resized on the server side for convenience, it'd be really helpful.

Just to give an idea, I'm usually now capturing things at 12000x9000 pixels on my Galaxy S21 Ultra. Anytime it's smaller, it's usually because I captured photos while I was capturing video, or had zoomed in past the optical zoom limit. For example here's a list of a bunch that I took last month...

Font Rectangle Screenshot Parallel Pattern

It's so incredibly inconvenient to have to edit them first to get them below the max size; and even going to 6000x4500 is usually not enough even with reducing jpeg compression to 60%. :)

Like I said, first world problem. But if the forum software could help in some manner at least, it would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what that would add to David's server costs even just to take them all in and scale them but right now he's got it set to just over 3MB per image.

As much as I understand your logic Doug, I can't think of any upside other than you not needing to edit them.
Server storage costs will rise, data usage for those of us browsing via cellular will soar, they will take longer for us to load when viewing, etc.

My issue is apps like tapatalk that could ease this by uploading only smaller versions are IMNSHO a pale version of the full TCF experience, having photos that big in the forum would probably result in me blocking them so I don't load them and thus having me miss some things I would normally want to see.

I don't think we need to store bigger sizes. For example, could the server shrink the files to fir the limit? That would allow painless uploading without increasing the storage costs. I seem to recall the old version would do this, but I may be thinking of a different site.

I just did a simple screen grab of a part of a map being displayed on my desktop and even that exceeded the max file size and I had to open Photoshop, paste that image in, resize it, save it, and upload it.

It's just becoming far more common to have to go through these multiple steps. I suppose I should look to see if there's any sort of browser extension that could assist in it, but I never have these issues with other sites that allow pasting in images or files; and they do support resampling automatically (Invision-based sites, for instance, like Cruise Critic and Royal Caribbean Blog).

Actually I've also wanted to have ways to manually reduce the size of the image I upload too -- like phone screenshots; they display rather large in threads because of their orientation and how the forum only resizes (for display, at least) mostly based on width.

The forum already caches images; not sure if it in that step could or does any resampling as an intermediate step, or if all resizing is entirely browser-based.
