Has anyone done it yet? If wanting to use a really large drive (8TB and up), need an intermediary drive (starting with a 500GB)? Want to make sure it works as once swap in a new drive pretty much everything on old drive will be lost whether upgrade works or not.

I do not know. I have just fixed MFSTools to be able to make a direct copy to drives over 4 TB. No intermediary drive needed. I have not tested it except in a virtual setting and so have not published it yet. My understanding is that the Edges can now self format drives correctly that are larger than 3 TB. If that is the case, then TiVo fixed the 2 TB partition bug. I do not know if that fix will transcend to the Bolt and Roamios. If it does, it is likely only in TE4 as he Edges are on TE4. I will be testing it out on my Bolt on TE4 with a 10 TB drive in the near future. If it works on my Bolt, then it will likely work on the Edge. If it does not work on my Bolt, then I need to find an Edge for testing.

How about a copy and expand to a smaller drive (like 3TB or under). From the 500GB drive. I've seen a good number of upgrades on the Edge but all starting fresh I believe, no copy/expands yet. If someone has done an Edge copy and expand to any size drive I would be interested, could not find in search.

So I just copied my TE4 Bolt's 500 GB drive directly to a 10 TB drive. My Bolt booted the 10 TB drive right up and had 1606 HD hours. My recordings played back just fine. It is going through an update right now and if it survives then the fixes are ready for release.

So the update I did on my TE4 Bolt was a Kickstart 58. It went into a GSOD ( no green screen but same verbiage) boot loop. Recovered via MFSTools mfsck. Further testing reveals the TE4 Bolt can now self format large drives (over 3TB) but Kickstart 57 and 58 are now broken and does not complete. Fortunately it seems to be recoverable with MFSTools. I do not know if it survives an OS update. But if the Edges do, then no reason to think the Bolt would not.

Did you end up trying to upgrade your Edge, if so how did it go?
Not yet, did not want to screw with it until at least the first year warranty was used up. As might have to damage the sticker to get inside the Edge. I will try it eventually, I have the 500GB OTA models, with do an MFST copy/expand to an external 4TB most likely, Sata to Sata, no Esata. For now don't think I will go larger than 4TB though I might for fun in the future, that would involve MFST with adds and add fixes (and probably the 4TB as an intermediary drive), if want to keep recordings. If starting fresh (ie don't care about recordings or settings), the Edge should format itself.

Oh, reading back further perhaps can do direct copy 500GB to 10TB or more. Interesting experiments possible, probably easiest though is just start fresh and let the Edge or TE4 Bolt or TE4 Roamio format itself, up to maybe 14TB?

On TE4 you can go as large of a drive you can afford.

My parents just got a 2TB Cable Edge, I probably won't upgrade it for at least a year or so, but when I do I figure I will put a 8TB in it.
The goal would be for it to retain all settings and shows and be internal.
Please let me know what you end up doing.
Thanks

Well I picked up a couple of those 14TB easystores recently. Might be fun to play with one with an Edge. Since my Edge are only 500GB I can transfer what is on there to a TE3 Tivo, then play with copies or fresh. Has anyone done a 20? Not even sure the 20s are CMR, looked at one, seemed to be some new format, not CMR or SMR, EAMR/ePMR?
