I searched, but wasn't clear if I could clone a drive to a larger drive to add space and keep the recordings.

I was thinking 3GB would be enough originally, but I wasn't expecting to get a good deal on a 3TB Bolt. Well now I did (, TIP: Don't end your ebay auctions at 2am on a Monday-Thurs if you want the highest price. You will lose out on a lot of bid sniping raising your prices at the end.)

I was planning on upgrading to a larger drive from the start before this, but I just bought a bolt with a 3TB (because it had 6 tuners). I'm thinking I may as well use it and just see how it goes. I'm curious if I fill the drive, will I be able to clone to a 8TB and keep all my recordings? I'm not concerned about the drive failing in the near future, I'd like to just see how close I am getting towards filling it and when I do I would like to clone it then.

It should work on Bolts too, but only if you replace the internal drive with a 3.5" external drive. Since most cable companies have switched to H.264 encoding you may not ever need it. My factory 3TB Roamio Pro is only rated for 480 hours, but I have over 750 hours and about 20% free.

If I do replace the drive its going to be with the WD82PURZ (Western digital 8TB purple series surveillance drive, that I see for about $230 on amazon). Its failure rate was 1.5 mil MTBF compared to EVERY 2.5" drive mentioned that is rated for 600K. I know that's not an exact number, but being 8TB, a surveillance drive, and only a slight price increase over the other drives mentioned (and less than the factory 3TB drive). It seemed like the best bet.
