Can I buy subscription only from TiVo?

I just ordered a TiVo box from Costco. Now, I understand I must subscribe for the service through TiVo, but when I try to do that on the TiVo web site, it appears I must buy the box from them as well as the service. Unfortunately, their office is closed now, so I can't get my answer from them.

Is it so that if one buys the box elsewhere, one cannot buy just the subscription from TiVo? In other words, we must buy both from TiVo?

no, you don't have to buy a box from TiVo. just call them in the morning, they'll set you right up with an immediate account.

Use the above link for already purchased TiVo's. There's no need to purchase a TiVo straight from the website in order to activate it online. The link is in the Service and Support link of the TiVo website.
Thank you, both of you. Now I'll be able to sleep tonight.

And, if you ever buy a different box and you want to activate it and deactivate the old one, that is easy too from the website.

Yes I bought a Series 2 box on Ebay and paid for a subscription, and it works fine. Just call them on the phone.

I'm pretty sure you have to call TiVo to deactivate any TiVo.

Not if you are swapping its service to another box.

The tivo website has a "change service number " option to transfer an existing (non-lifetime) subscription from one tivo to another which results in the first tivo being deactivated. The option has been available for at least as long as I've had a Tivo.
