Cablevision Proper Install

860 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  dubluv
The installer that came out to install my cablecards did not seem to really know "how" to do it properly, and with no surprise, a few things are not working properly. This is on a Tivo HD with Cablevision service. I got 2 cablecards and was trying to figure out what was setup incorrectly.

I am able to receive all channels that I pay for on the first tuner, but when I switch to the second - it seems to work for most stations but the premium (e.g. HBO) end up sending me to a screen for my CableCard 2 to have it activated. Now, I know that this was activated but before I contact cablevision and do more trial and error, I wanted to make sure that something else isn't to blame. Currently only the digital coax cable is connected as the cable guy said that you do not need to hookup a splitter and connect it to the analog connector. Is this correct? Any advice on what I should look at next is GREATLY appreciated!

Could be a bad card or maybe it just needs to be reauthorized by CV. Either way, call them. Cablevision is pretty good with the Tivo's and most of their guys are very knowledgeable when it comes to installing them. And yes, you only need the one coax connection to "cable in".
Only one cable connectioin in.

You probably have to have them hit the other card again, or even initialize it again.

THEY CAN DO THIS REMOTELY!!. Resist their knee-jerk reaction to roll a truck again!

I ended up doing all the tivo navigation for the tech. . who just kept saying :"Cable cards are hard!"...

They seemed to need to unbind them, rebind them and then "hit" them.

I would recommend calling late in the evening... I was ready for an arguement, when I said do this remotely, since thats all the tech did, but it must have not been a busy time, so the guy was very helpful and walked through it...

I spoke with Cablevision and we tried troubleshooting things on the phone and they reset the cards on their end and verified all the numbers matched up, but no dice.

One question.... for working Tivo HD's with cablecards, when you go into the Host ID screen for that card - does it give you the black screen with the info and say "To activate service for this card please call (866) x?" I'm not sure if that is always there for people who have it working, or if that is saying that my card(s) are not activated.
When you call, ask for an HD specialist. They have them and they are trained in CableCard and most are familiar with TiVos. Tell them to please hit both cards in your unit, as they often have the numbers backwards. Also, if they ask for a card number, the number they want is the number off of the sleeve, not the card itself and not the number that the TiVo is reporting.

When I had a similar problem, the tech I talked to on the phone, who was very knowledgeable (if a bit difficult to understand because of his very thick Russian accent), very specifically asked for the number on the card itself, instructing me specifically to unplug the unit and remove the cards from the box to look at the numbers. Seems to me that this is in fact the most reliable way to identify the card, and it worked in my case.

no, the screen you should see is the same black with gray border, but it should say a bunch of data info on the left side. if its cc2, pop it out for a minute, and push it back in. tivo will ask you to run guided setup again, but you should only forward thru each screen til you get to the channel setup and verify you've got all your proper channels. rebooting the tivo helps if you run out of options. i've tried 'restarting' from the tivo menu, but it didnt help card issues all the time. hard rebooting usually initiates everything. i'm also on cablevision, and the installer followed the included tivo instructions exactly. i told him he had to do it, or i wouldn't give him pizza and beer. :D
