Just received a letter from Cablevision / Optimum / Altice stating that Cable Cards will be obsolete in October of this year. No more Tivos I guess

Just spoke with Optimum Retention. All cable card support will be discontinued in October. They worked out a deal with me to provide 4 streaming boxes, upgrade me to fiber, upgrade my package to include everything (I previously got almost everything anyway, just no cinemax channels) and premium level cloud dvr (150 hours storage) for $100/month less than I'm currently paying. Of course I won't have Tivo, but so be it. I'll keep my Tivo's hooked up to be able to watch shows I download on my computer via alternate means and transfer to the box(es). Four boxes and 2 minis, 25 years. Oh well.

I have an Bolt that will do OTA or cable. Right now I have an interior antenna that does okay on a TV, thinking of going rooftop. I want to give the streaming box a shot. I tried to get one yesterday but I was told at the store he can't provision it while I still had the cabelcard on my account.

Question please. If I connect a digital antenna to my Roamio (or Edge), will it automatically recognize channels or do I have to scan for channels? If the latter, how do I do that?

You have to have a TiVo model that supports OTA.

Only a 4-tuner Roamio can. If your Roamio has 6 tuners (Plus or Pro models), it cannot do OTA.

There are no Edge models that can do cable and OTA so if you are using this Edge with cable currently, it cannot do OTA.

If you do have a 4-tuner Roamio you can switch from cable to OTA by rerunning Guided Setup and it will scan for available channels as part of that.

Turns out I also have a 4 tuner Roamio and a Bolt. I'll try both after the switch-over. Problem is I'll have to figure out how to distribute since neither has rca out. I'll probably use an hdmi splitter and an hdmi to rca converter to the modulator.

Well, the deed is done. No more Tivo's, 4 streaming boxes from Optimum (installer insisted there is no sense in requesting a dvr box, they will be going 100% streaming soon anyway). I miss the program guide and the ability to pause or rewind live tv. The Optimum interface is horrible compared to Tivo. Still, it is what it is. And I was unable to distribute the signal from one of the other tivos since I am now on fiber as opposed to cable.

I'll continue to be somewhat active here in the Now Playing sub forum for the info and because I enjoy so many of our members' posts. But I miss my Tivos :(

Wait, you don't have a program guide? How do you find what to record? I'm sorry you don't have Xfinity as their xi6 wireless box has all the recordings in the cloud (default of 150 hours whether HD or SD but the recordings are deleted after a year) and their Guide is pretty decent and you can rewind live TV. I'm still getting used to the setup as I spent about 22 years using Tivos, but I'm managing. I was one of those who had to deal with Xfinitey trying to update Cablecard firmware and mine didn't want to and the Xfinitey technician didn't want to fix it. I do miss being able to use my current Roamio Tivo, which has a 3T hard drive, but I have it still hooked up so I can watch the remaining stuff I recorded on it

Since you got a box to record programs for now, you can take the time to look around at other options if they exist

I just switched from Tivo to the Spectrum streaming app on an Apple TV. Only cable equipment I know have is the cable modem. I called retention the day after I returned the cable card and got them to reduce my bill by telling them YoutubeTV was cheaper.

I just went to Optimum on Long Island to get a DVR box just in case my TIVO shuts down according to the letter. The letter say October no actual date. I asked does it skip commercials, can I record in advance like two months, Answer was NO and NO. Brings out a box I said how old is that box his answer is 2017, They are not making new boxes so for $300 a month I get a refurnish box. Oh the kicker is to watch my roku I need to hit the input button, he says it doesn't always work. Are you kidding me Optimum What a joke, they have a monopoly as Fios is the same and they don't even have a store to sit down with anyone. I am hoping I can install the crappy box and keep TIVO till I have to transfer over my one pass which could take a week I have about 70 shows I record.

So I got the box from Optimum, I am so stressed out, so difficult to program, no search button, you need to know when a show is coming on and can only record 2 weeks before. The fast forward and back buttons go so fast all I do is rewind and fast forward till I get to the right spot multiple times each show. I feel I was in the George Jetson era with TIVO and now I am in the Leave it to Beaver era. Life should not be about going backwards. I was literally crying on the phone with customer service with TIVO when I had to cancel the service. I begged them to come out with a box that does not need the cable service and can have a DVR. Thanks for reading and listening me rant. I am so sorry to go

There are some TiVo's that work with an antenna. I have one. I also got the Samsung box on Friday with DVR service. The TiVo will stay on the Cablecard until it stops working then I'll pull the card and hook it up to an antenna for OTA stuff.

I read quite a few posts of people not happy with there service in this thread. I posted this once today but I'm not sure everyone will see it where its posted so I am just going to provide a link to what I would suggest for those of you not happy since its a similar subject to something I just replied to. This is not for Xfinity customers who are happy, it is for those who complained about the guides, and not being able to pause live tv etc with there cable company. Again I know several Xfinity people who posted nothing but good things, this is not for you. I think the complaints I read were mostly non Xfinity customers. Those of you looking for a more tivo like service with the ability to pause live tv, have unlimited recordings, and many more tivo like features please check the link out below:

I know almost all cable providers provide a discount when bundling internet and cable so the price might not make sense if you are in a bundle. If you do have affordable internet available without a bundle dtvstream is the way to go if you are not happy. I believe the dtv stream Gemini/osprey box is number one and xfinitys box is right behind it. Again this is only for people not happy with there current service. I hope this helps at least one person. How much money are these cable companys saving by not providing support for cablecard is something I am curious about. If it is not much I wonder if this is all about forcing customers to rent or buy equipment from them.
