I'm new to HD and thinking of subscribing. How does the tivo3 work? I don't understand how the cablecards fit into this scenario.

The Series 3 directly tunes digital cable and OTA itself. It uses Cablecards to decrypt the encrypted pay channels, and to provide channel mapping.
