The Series 3 and TiVo HD will work only with cable and OTA (dozens of posts on that subject).
Any other provider essentially needs their DVR for HD, including DirecTV.

I am getting sick of my cable company and I am looking for an alternative. Will the HD Tivos work with DirectTV or do I need to use their DVR?

You could buy a used HR10-250 HD DirecTV/Tivo DVR, but those can't record DirecTV's new MPEG4 HD channels.
