Briarpatch - new series on USA. Stars Rosario Dawson. Premiered this week (Feb 6 2020). From wiki...

Briarpatch is an American anthology series starring Rosario Dawson based on the Ross Thomas novel of the same name. The series was picked up in late January 2019 by USA Network, after being ordered to pilot in April 2018.

When Detective Felicity Dill is killed in a car bombing, her sister Allegra Dill, an investigator working for a senator returns home to San Bonifacio to find her killer. In the process of her investigation she uncovers a web of corruption in the small Texas town.

I thought it was an okay start. Didn't grab me strong, but enjoyable enough to keep watching for now. Weird vibe to this show. Definitely had that noir feel to it.

Ten episode season.

The black lawyer was great in...was it Fargo?
He is a Kenyan actor who played a baddie in "The Black List" among other things.

I usually understand all French dialects except from northern France so I chuckle listening to him butcher that line to save his French tutor's sister from blowing up.

I remember him from the Blacklist. I've seen him elsewhere as well. I like him, good guy or bad guy!

Yeah, weird vibe for sure! I really liked it. Not great but very much more than good. The mix of comedy and drama is done well and a really good cast.
I am surprised that the reaction is mostly "it's ok or worse." Even though it is sort of a rip off of Fargo, I thought it was better than Fargo season 3.

I thought it will be one of the five best series to premier this year.

Well it beats the heck out of all too many other shows these days. You know the ones with the twitchy premise and the absolutely irritating need to emphasize PC-ness.

I'm out. It's just not entertaining. Tried to watch the two episodes I'm behind on, but only made it part-way thru E2 before I quit.

Rosario Dawson's character is "too cool" for me, she's playing the distant, disinterested investigator, but it doesn't create any appeal for me. Everything (story, cinematography, sets) seems so noir, but doesn't click to create a show you want to watch. IOW, style over substance.

Maybe it gets better, and I like RD, but there's too much good TV to invest my time in this one.

This show is the biggest TV disappointment I can remember in a good while. When I saw that Rosario Dawson was going to be in a Sam Esmail project, I thought it was a sure bet. And I do agree the cast is great. But try as I might, I cannot get into this AT ALL. It just feels like I can't even figure out what's happening. And not in a good way, like a David Lynch movie. The whole thing feels like a bunch of random scenes, all of which are kind of interesting on their own, but they don't add up to anything. My wife has even less patience for it than I do. We stopped watching after about the 5th or 6th episode. It sits there staring us in the face on our Apple TV "Up Next" list, but I'm feeling like odds are pretty low that we're ever going to go back to finish it.
