Boxes don't see each other

This is new. I've got two HDs; each has Internet access and can get video on demand, etc. Each can see what's on my PC (using Desktop Plus). But neither can see what's on the other; each reports there are no programs on the other.

In all other respects, the network features are working fine.

Any ideas?

thx

Can your Desktop Plus see what's on each Tivo? In any case, problems like this have sometimes been fixed by simply restarting the Tivos, one at a time.
I run into the problem all the time (just this morning in fact) where Tivo HD 1 can't see Tivo HD 2. What worked for me:

Go to Tivo.com and reset both Tivos to ensure video sharing is enabled. If it already is, turn it off (uncheck the boxes), save, then go back and recheck the boxes and save. Do this for both Tivo HDs.

Make both Tivo HDs connect to Tivo via the menu.

After a successful connection, see if the Tivos can see each other. If they can't, restart both Tivos. Restarting via the menu (rather than pulling plug) seems to work fine.

I dislike going thru this Chinese fire drill (far too often for my liking) but at least this solution does seem to work.

Sometimes it helps to shut down and reboot the entire network (all TiVos, all computers, the router, the cable/DSL modem).

That's a pain in the posterior that shouldn't be necessary, but that's the world of TiVo for you.

Yes, Desktop can see both TiVos.
Thanks all for the info.

The other issue is that TiVo DT+ has been the worst program ever. It gets slower and slower and slower (opening, then responding to clicks, etc) until I have to do a repair reinstall. In the past, that has fixed it for a while. Now it doesn't help at all.

So I've got to do a full uninstall and start again with it. Maybe that's part of the problem. I'll let y'all know.

84lion, reinstall did not solve the problem. I'll try your solution next!
I had the same problem > went to TiVo.com > support > chat, they did something and it worked, took like five minutes.

Doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this...

Then don't do that!

Seriously, this entire forum is all about alternatives to TiVo Desktop. The alternatives are free. Why keep beating your head against a concrete wall?

They seem to have left "Alternatives to " off of the begining of the title of this forum.

This has nothing to do with the original problem cited - TiVos being able to see content on other TiVos on the same LAN. Whether or not TTG is even installed on a computer that happens to be on the same LAN is irrelevant. The boxes should be able to "see" each other provided they're on the same LAN (and subnet - extremely rare for home LAN to have subnets), they're on the same TiVo account (same service number), and recording transfer has been enabled for both in the TiVo account (this must be set online as already described).

I have had a similar problem with mutual visibility among three TiVos on my LAN coming and going randomly, seemingly at will, as if possessed by poltergeists. I wonder if the TiVos use Apple's Bonjour to discover each other. If so it may explain part of (my) problem as I have found it unreliable on my LAN. TTG has trouble seeing the three TiVos reliably if I turn off its beacon and use Bonjour instead (config setting inside TTG). Turn off Bonjour in TTG and revert to the beacon, and reliable visibility of all the TiVos is restored. If the TiVos use Bonjour to find each other that would explain why it randomly comes and goes.

I also wonder if a full TiVo with no more capacity to record anything more until something is deleted shuts off ability to see other TiVos on the LAN. I'll have to try some experiments to see what happens - if this can turn visibility of other boxes on and off.

You've given everything on your network that doesn't move a fixed IP, right?

Fair enough. You're correct, there's nothing that limits discussion to "alternatives to".

However, all I ever see here whenever "TiVo Desktop" is mentioned is "problem". Usually without a solution. Most of the "alternatives" are supported and are improved on an ongoing basis.

TiVo Desktop, and its problems and shortcomings, the existence of which I readily admit, having encountered at least some of them myself, are a valid topic for a forum entitled "TiVo Home Media Features & TiVoToGo", as are alternatives, good, bad, or fair to middlin'.

The chances are greater that anyone with problems with TVD is going to post here than that someone will stop by to sing its praises. The wheel that needs grease is the one most likely to squeak.

I do wish it were a better program, but so far it manages to do the job for me in its own rather creaky way, and TiVo would be getting the same amount of money out of me each month if I weren't using it, so I can't complain about the price.

Yes . . . outside the limited range of addresses used by my LAN's internal DHCP for the (mostly) portable client devices. The TiVos all have fixed IP addresses. Shouldn't be relevant provided the fixed IPs and the range the LAN DHCP is allowed to assign are mutually exclusive.
