I can take it up to a point, but both my wife and I agreed that this episode was WAAAY past anything they've ever done before. Unacceptable (at least to us).Alfer2003 said:True it's preachy and political as hell...but I just let it go ..Overall I like the rest of the "non-politcal" stuff enough to keep enjoying the show...I just chaulk up his rants as silly gibberish from a confused man.
Suing another party (the school, in this case) for something that is purely one's own personal decision and responsibility is certainly an example of how "screwed up" society has become. Personal responsibility continues to go down the drain.MScottC said:I need to see that at least some other people realize how screwed up our society has become over the last few years.
That is because it was not grounded in any reality. The monetary award must have been thrown in for the sole purpose of making it appear as unrealistic as possible (short of something like jailing the principal).bicker said:I wasn't really clear on the judge's ruling this time....

Hi:
I do think they're preachy sometimes.
However, schools do have a responsibility to give students the tools to deal with our world.
You can only take personal responsibility for your actions if you learn and understand the consequences and can take actions to prevent them, when possible. If schools don't teach it, we know most parents don't want to and most parents prefer that schools teach their kids about how to be safe, especially if they're going to have sex.
If we KNOW that something works to prevent a disease, we are being irresponsible, as a society, NOT to provide information about it.
Suppose we knew there was a way to prevent cancer but didn't share that because it was too controversial or what some people might call "too value laden". That would be irresponsible. Same thing with condoms. We can have a world that is filled with sex related images, temptation, come ons, etc. and not expect kids to be interested....curious...and tempted to find out what all the buzz is about.....
Sorry to get "preachy" here myself, but for some people who watch this show, they might have had their eyes opened by what Alan Shore had to say.....
I love this show and hope that they don't always have preachy messages, but overall, I think they're delivered in an funny and insightful way.
Love that William Shatner...he is PERFECT for this role!
I agree with you on that wholeheartedly. In this case, the young lady did claim personal responsiblity. However she also claimed that the school (and our nation) abdicated its responsiblity to educate her properly. Based on her reaction at the end, and by comments made thruoughout the show, she was NOT looking for financial reward, she was looking to coerce the school system to re-institute education about condoms.Hansky said:Suing another party (the school, in this case) for something that is purely one's own personal decision and responsibility is certainly an example of how "screwed up" society has become. .
Almost the same way they just know that putting a penis in a vagina feels awesome. You have to be home-schooled and sheltered from the media to not know.brebeans said:Sorry...I know this thread is about Boston Legal, so I'll stop after this..
But just how are kids supposed to just "know" that condoms help prevent disease if no one teaches them or talks to them about it? If they get infor from friends, it's frequently inaccurate.

Well said by you both...that's why Alan's rantings were so unbelievable to me and my wife.danplaysbass said:I also found the rant to be a little too much this episode. I believe our schools are here to to teach reading, writing, math, science and history. It IS NOT the schools job to parent our kids. Many parents these days expect the school to do their job. It is the parents job to teach respect, discipline, honor, humility, and yes, about sex....
Yes. Luckily, that's not a possibility, so there is nothing to worry about.danplaysbass said:Take this logic to the next step. The girl sued because she wasn't taught about condoms. So lets say that in the future we learn that evolution is wrong and creation was right but it was not taught. Does that then give me grounds to sue my school for misleading me?
Only if they deliberately taught you to do math or to read improperly, i.e., taught you that 1+1=3 or that "read" means "draw a line through words with a magic marker".danplaysbass said:Or another angle. Can a school be responsible for my math skills not being what they should be or for a person's inability to read?
It will take millenia before condoms get integrated into our DNA.Jesda said:Almost the same way they just know that putting a penis in a vagina feels awesome.
