True it's preachy and political as hell...but I just let it go ..Overall I like the rest of the "non-politcal" stuff enough to keep enjoying the show...I just chaulk up his rants as silly gibberish from a confused man.

I can take it up to a point, but both my wife and I agreed that this episode was WAAAY past anything they've ever done before. Unacceptable (at least to us).

Oddly I found it to be LESS preachy than most of the rest.

Jerry is BEYOND tiresome.

The bet was pretty good. The nun translator was VERY funny, but the "timely," "ripped from the headlines" animal fighting storyline itself was weak.

If you don't like what DEK has to say, don't watch it. But quite frankly, I cheer on the positions espoused by Alan Shore and the other attorneys on this show. And I will keep watching it. I need to see that at least some other people realize how screwed up our society has become over the last few years.

I wasn't really clear on the judge's ruling this time.... I think he should have simply prohibited the school from teaching anything if they didn't teach everything. The problem is teaching one thing OR the other... teaching neither or both are defensible positions IMHO. (Given the no-win situation schools are put in, they should be held blameless for avoiding the issue entirely.)

Suing another party (the school, in this case) for something that is purely one's own personal decision and responsibility is certainly an example of how "screwed up" society has become. Personal responsibility continues to go down the drain.

That is because it was not grounded in any reality. The monetary award must have been thrown in for the sole purpose of making it appear as unrealistic as possible (short of something like jailing the principal).

Look no further than the message sent after Alan and new-lawyer left the courtroom.

Hi:
I do think they're preachy sometimes.

However, schools do have a responsibility to give students the tools to deal with our world.
You can only take personal responsibility for your actions if you learn and understand the consequences and can take actions to prevent them, when possible. If schools don't teach it, we know most parents don't want to and most parents prefer that schools teach their kids about how to be safe, especially if they're going to have sex.

If we KNOW that something works to prevent a disease, we are being irresponsible, as a society, NOT to provide information about it.

Suppose we knew there was a way to prevent cancer but didn't share that because it was too controversial or what some people might call "too value laden". That would be irresponsible. Same thing with condoms. We can have a world that is filled with sex related images, temptation, come ons, etc. and not expect kids to be interested....curious...and tempted to find out what all the buzz is about.....

Sorry to get "preachy" here myself, but for some people who watch this show, they might have had their eyes opened by what Alan Shore had to say.....

I love this show and hope that they don't always have preachy messages, but overall, I think they're delivered in an funny and insightful way.

Love that William Shatner...he is PERFECT for this role!

I agree with you on that wholeheartedly. In this case, the young lady did claim personal responsiblity. However she also claimed that the school (and our nation) abdicated its responsiblity to educate her properly. Based on her reaction at the end, and by comments made thruoughout the show, she was NOT looking for financial reward, she was looking to coerce the school system to re-institute education about condoms.

Any kid of high school age who isn't aware of the fact that condoms help fend off sexually transmitted diseases is an idiot and Darwinism should take over.

Seriously, I grew up in the 50's and everybody then knew that 'rubbers' were a requirement. Not that we of high school age ever got a chance to use them.

I also found the rant to be a little too much this episode. I believe our schools are here to to teach reading, writing, math, science and history. It IS NOT the schools job to parent our kids. Many parents these days expect the school to do their job. It is the parents job to teach respect, discipline, honor, humility, and yes, about sex.

Take this logic to the next step. The girl sued because she wasn't taught about condoms. So lets say that in the future we learn that evolution is wrong and creation was right but it was not taught. Does that then give me grounds to sue my school for misleading me?

Or another angle. Can a school be responsible for my math skills not being what they should be or for a person's inability to read?

Sorry...I know this thread is about Boston Legal, so I'll stop after this..

But just how are kids supposed to just "know" that condoms help prevent disease if no one teaches them or talks to them about it? If they get infor from friends, it's frequently inaccurate.

Also, if schools only teach about math, science, etc.....are those all taught i a vacuum? Schools also teach about responsibility, critical thinking, problem solving, respect, etc.

If information can help kids lead productive, successful healthy lives, then they should teach it.

Research shows that kids who are healthy, both physically and psychologically, learn better, have better grades, etc.

Kids that are worried about whether they're pregnant, have an STD or whatever, will not learn the math, science, reading, etc. that is taught because they are distracted and haven't learned how to handle other things in life...like raging hormones during adolescence, for instance

OK, I'll stop now.

And, I love this show and can't wait to see how the new characters continue to develop

Almost the same way they just know that putting a penis in a vagina feels awesome. You have to be home-schooled and sheltered from the media to not know.

Kids aren't that ignorant, and this 'case' assumes they are. Stupid yes, but kids are well informed.

I only dislike the preaching when I disagree with it. :)

One question not asked in this case was whether the school should be teaching sex ed at all. Had they not taught anything I think they might have escaped culpability. But by explicitly teaching abstinence and the fallibility of condoms they opened the door to their own liability.

In the case as presented, the school didn't just fail to teach about condoms, they taught that condoms are not effective. Like the whole "Reefer Madness" bit, they appeared to exaggerate the risks even with condoms to the point of giving the impression that if you didn't abstain as taught, don't even bother with the condom since it'll probably fail anyway.

The information that they chose the curriculum based on funding was bad for the school's case. "Why did you say this?" "We were paid to" I doesn't come across quite the same as if you actually believed it was the truth, but instead were just being a paid mouthpiece.

The girl didn't ask for money. As presented the result was that other students would get additional information the school didn't give her.

Of course, she could have got that additional info from any number of PSAs on TV. Perhaps she had a TiVo and skipped them all. Next week Alan can sue TiVo when someone time shifted and missed a severe weather alert.

Well said by you both...that's why Alan's rantings were so unbelievable to me and my wife.

Yes. Luckily, that's not a possibility, so there is nothing to worry about. :)

Only if they deliberately taught you to do math or to read improperly, i.e., taught you that 1+1=3 or that "read" means "draw a line through words with a magic marker".
