I realize this is a Spoilers thread, but just a heads up that article contains pretty big spoilers about the events of this season if you haven't watched all the way through yet.
Thanks, I edited the post to flag that. It does warn you at the beginning of the article, but some folks just scroll through before reading carefully.

No worries, it's my own fault for entering a season spoiler thread before finishing the binge. You and Thom obviously binged the whole thing the first night!

Drawback of season threads, I suppose. I can't knock out a whole season that quick.

Last season I binged the whole thing in one afternoon and evening. But this time I'm busier and am only two episodes in, so I haven't read that article "below the fold" (past the bottom of my phone screen) yet.

I finished the season last night and must say I was quite disappointed. The scene with Honey early on knocked me on my butt but otherwise, I found the major storyline to be a real bust. When I think of the endings of other seasons, when this one ended I kinda thought "it's over?" And every cop show has to focus on what big pr*cks the FBI is... I get tired of it.

It was good to see all the players again though, especially the Lieutenant finally winning over the Captain. Crate & Barrel complaining their way towards retirement, and Jimmy and Bosch seeming to be on better terms. Was that Shaz across the bar in the bar scene? Sorta looked like her, acted like her, but focusing on her right profile instead of the left (I love that one!), sort of put me off. Also finally hit me that Judge Sobel was played by Beth Armstrong, Doh!

Overall I loved the series, and a recent re-viewing of Deadwood reminded me of how much I liked Titus, the actor.

I thought this season was below average by Bosch standards. It seems like they forced things in the direction they needed to set up the spinoff. Also, having only 8 episodes instead of the usual 10 rushed some of the storylines and resulted in some really sloppy writing, IMO (unusual for the show).

Random thoughts and examples:
  • La Mayorista was really hyped in the season preview, and she turned out to be a zilch that got maybe 10 minutes of screen time.
  • It was never really clear why the mayor turned on Irving in the first place. He dropped out of the race and supported her campaign. Maybe it was Jen Kowski's influence, bitter that he blindsided her in S6? Did the mayor just want a Latino Chief?
  • The whole plot to set up Billets was so dumb - how did the Captain think he was going to get away with that? His fraternity brother, who owned the jewelry store, flipped in like 30 seconds. I think having a subplot about sexism in the police is important, but this frame job was so obvious my 13 year old would have figured it out.
  • Speaking of 30 seconds - Irving only needed that long with the mayor to buy himself 5 more years. She caved way too easily, with no political maneuvering of her own. His rivalry with her predecessor was much more fleshed out, and a lot more entertaining.
  • Who the heck was Marco? He was mentioned three times in the plot with the hedge fund manager (the bigger fish who hired the hitman) and was already on the plane when HF guy got arrested, but we never saw him. Just HF guy's boyfriend?
  • The cartel, eMe, and local drug dealers set up a big meeting in a busy restaurant with civilians present? They're frisking and disarming these guys as they come in the main entrance - and of course don't frisk Peña, the guy wearing a wire.
  • Bosch commits career suicide (which isn't completely out of character), and Billets (recently promoted) says nothing, just kind of shrugs and walks off.
  • The cops that walked Peña out of the police station at the end just let some random civilian walk right up and shoot him at point-blank range.
They did bring back a bunch of old characters that gave it kind of a reunion feel - Brasher (Bosch's girlfriend in S1), the LVPD detective, Goshen (FBI former undercover), and a few more. Would have loved to see Hovan (DEA agent from S5 & 6).

Anybody know how many recurring characters in what I might call the Veronica Mars spinoff?

I only know what the Hollywood Reporter says:
'Bosch' Spinoff a Go at Amazon's IMDb TV
"The series will feature Titus Welliver, Mimi Rogers and Madison Lintz reprising their roles from the Prime Video series."

So at minimum Bosch, Honey/Money, and Maddie.

There in lies the problem. IMDB TV -> commercials

it's like they moved from Viking Cruises to Carnival.
I will have to wait until it's available without the ads.

No worries, you can already skip the ads, using the new Channels DVR / PlayOn integration.

This show is what is finally going to motivate me to set that up.

Yes this season was a little thin, but after Maddie was in danger about three episodes in then I was invested. And it was great to see all the characters again. They're like old friends.
