I'm interested in doing a 4TB External for my Bolt 6-Tuner Cable. This Bolt has never had a CableCARD install and I thought I'd just do it to be done with it. Bolt was rolled back to TE3 as soon as it was unboxed. I've transferred some content to the 1TB just to confirm operation etc.

How best to accomplish this?

I have an External Enclosure modified that will work but I doubt I'll use this for other than maybe prepping if needed and some testing on a different Bolt I bought for just experimentation.

Will TE3 format 3TB of this HDD and then I could just 'expand' it using tools? Will TE3 format 3TB of any size HDD that a person might desire and then use tools to 'expand'?

With TE3, what you end up with on 4TB or larger drives is NOT the first 3TB. Due to a bug in the OS when dealing with partitions over 2TB it's more like a few hundred gig.

Let it auto-format the drive, then use MFS Reformatter.

So I just let it do 'whatever' to the 4TB remove it and then do the MFSR? I'll read a bit on that and that sounds like a preferred vs TE4 and a 'roll-back'.

Upgrade it (back) to TE4. Install the new Hard Drive, let it format it. Sidegrade it back to TE3?

I had thought about that and might still consider it but this would get me the experience w/MFSR. I did pretty well with MFSTools doing the 8TB Roamio, doing the 1TB to the 2-tuner basic Premiere using an 'Image by Greg' and I just hate the thought of a 'roll-back'!

I do have another Bolt here with 'no service' and I'm trying to negotiate w/Tivo to do something with a 30 day license and thought I'd try the TE4 on it. I don't speak and Tivo is pretty damn difficult to converse with in email exchanges. Ted had me pretty well connected with email exchanges and Margret before Ted.

I'm going to search for my Philips HDR112/212 today to use for hopefully a 're-case' of the Bolt with a free standing 3.5 HDD and maybe with an ATV4K in the same box. I can't start that until late March.
