Bolt + Reliability

I became a Tivo customer 30 months ago. I ordered a Bolt + (3 GB and 6 tuner model) and five minis. I am now waiting for my fourth Bolt + to be delivered. Doing a bit of quick math, each of the previous three Bolts has lasted, on average, ten months before failing. Am I just running across a series of bad units or have others in this community experienced similar problems?

For what it is worth, each of the five minis has failed and needed to be replaced.

As much as I love the Tivo system, this is all quite frustrating.

IMO, Bolt reliability factor 6/10, Hydra/v21 software reliability 3/10. Combined 2/10.

In essence, I never upgraded to Bolts from Roamio. Bolts use laptop drives and the failure rates are mounting.

My first Bolt+ lasted 10 months. I got a replacement. It last ten months. Rather than getting yet another replacement, I set up an external 3.5" drive. The 2.5" drives that came with the Bolt are crap.

I'm surprised at your minis having problems. Mine have worked for years. I haven't seen many reports of problems.

Two of my five of the minis are original. Three minis were replaced with refurbished units. In turn, two of the three refurbished units needed to be replaced. Replacing a mini is not that big of a deal. Replacing the Bolt + is a major pain.

My Bolt+ is rock solid. Now my Ring Video Doorbell is another story, 3rd one in 3 months.....

Many of us have a piece of technology that drives us crazy, we just can't live without the high tech stuff, or so we think.

So true.
my bolt+ harddrive failed today, had it for 3 years. Do they still replace units for free or do they charge a lot?
If you're paying monthly, they often replace them for $50.

Maybe try a new hard drive first?

They will replace the Bolt with a refurbished unit. The price that they charge is prorated by how long it has been out of warranty. They will explain the two options for returning the unit when you talk to tech support.

thanks, they quoted me $150 for replacement, but when I asked if there were any other options they dropped it down to $79.

Would paying for the refurbished unit for $79 be a better option than trying to replace the harddrive myself?

I've been using a 2TB WD20NPVX for my Bolt Vox for 11 months, which might be a better compromise.

I'm glad that you pushed back with TiVo, as the quoted replacement cost has gone anywhere from $0 to $150 or $200.

The Bolt+ has a 3TB drive, right? If so (and probably regardless), I'd grab the offer, as it can be less common to find suitable 3TB hard drives nowadays (although some are out there), and the prices have gone up--here, you have a drive that TiVo "certifies" as good for use. I've had luck with buying a refurb. TiVo box from TiVo--it seemed to be new.

You have already lost all of your recordings. I would just pay the $79 for a replacement.
If your original hard drive spins up at all, you could consider trying to clone it in a dock to see if it can be recovered.

I have an original 500gb 4 tuner Bolt and it has been solid since purchase in 2016. The Bolt+ is a less reliable unit, from what I have read.
