Black Screen (no graphics) all else works

I have a Hughes Directv Tivo Series 2 upgraded from 40GB to 120GB with MFS Tools. All worked well for about a year. All of a sudden the background graphic on all screens was missing... replaced with either solid black, or the video signal (live TV or the show being played). All functionality is OK, it was just very hard to read the text when video is being displayed behind the menus.

I bought a used box (same model) with a 40GB drive that worked fine. Backed up the drive with MFS, restored it to the 120GB drive from the first box, and now the 2nd box has the black screen problem!!!! I thought MFS tools wiped the destination drive, so the bug should have been gone.

Next I bought a new 160GB drive and restored the working 40GB image to it... same problem: missing graphics, black screen.

Can anyone please help?

You should post the mfstools commands you used to make your backups and restores. Did you use "-f9999" when making your backup?
Ah-hah!..... I did not use "-f9999" ... after reading some updated instructions, I now see it's needed for a Series 2 box. I used:

mfsbackup -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc

and it appears I should have used:

mfsbackup -f9999 -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc (Boot Cd and Floppy users command for Series 2 Standalones and DirecTiVos)

thanks much for the help. I'll give it a try.........

I think I did the same thing on the mfs command. What I'm wondering now is that it's been around a month since I did the restore and I've got new programs saved on the machine.

Can I backup what I have, restore it using the correct syntax and have it work right? Or would I have to revert to the older file and lose the new programs.

Thanks.
