Biggest Loser OAD 5/17/11

Well, for the way TV works, that couldn't have gone better. It pretty much guarantees another female biggest loser.

Jay has NO chance against Irene. I just hope that they are smart enough to not show or tell the vote like they did last year. That was mean. He knows that he's toast. Aside from Irene being far more likable, he knows his steak of having nine lives is over.

I'd be happy with any of them winning but they all need to lose a bunch more weight ( at least 25 lbs ) to be in the over 50% range that winners typically hit the last few years. If I were choosing, I'd choose Olivia simply cause I think she gets it more than the others. Hannah is pretty focused on the appearance issue and Irene is just so young, that I'm not sure she gets what a gift this has been for her.

I forget, do they do the marathon the same week as the finale? I google it and boy, the runner's board really go off on the idea of them doing this. Nasty stuff. Typical skinny people talk about fat people and how this is a disgrace. Really uncool.

I like Olivia the best. I don't think that she or Hannah have another 25 lbs to lose though... the site says they are 5'9" and 5'8" respectively. They are looking pretty skinny now. Irene definitely could, though, she is the same weight but 5'3".

I don't think Irene is that young though... the site says she's 26. She may not get it, but I don't know if I'd attribute that to age. :)

I forget, do they do the marathon the same week as the finale?
I think they usually do it in this episode... next week should just be all the live stuff.
the marathon would have been last night. Looks like they cut it this year and did another week on campus. Normally the 4 go home, and come back after 30 days. They have the marathon and a weigh in.

Unless my math is off, Irene is 16.5 Lbs from the 50% mark.

I agree that Jay has no chance. I just hope the 3 women look good at the finale. I always hate when the winner looks awful because they cut weight wrestling style to win it.

I think their main problem is where they need to lose the weight. Hannah has stomach issues and Olivia holds weight in her hips. Both are around 22 on the BMI scale. Irene is at about 25 so clearly, she has the best chance and right now is the leader. Jay could easily win but won't win the vote. I expect him to win the at home prize.

I did think this week was the marathon so I guess they finally dropped it. I expect this group wasn't fit enough yet. None of them are good runners. At least not compared to the last couple of years. Daris, Tara and Ada all killed that event.

I think the wrestling thing is less about that than the age of the winner. The older they are, the worse they look at the finale. Sheryl looked awful and so did jerry the at home winner the same year. If you're younger, the skins shrinks better. Aside from Irene, you could tell last night that all of the remaining contestants have some issues with that. Last year's winner Danny Cahill went on the Dr's TV show and they removed the excess skin. Most of them could really use a bit of surgical intervention by now.

You notice that aside from the portion of the show where they showed the weight loss as they rotated, all the girls have shapers on now.

Yeah, I'm bummed that there appears to be no marathon this time around. Running helped me lose 70 lbs (okay so I've gained 20 of it back but I'm holding steady there) and it's something kind of special to me. I'm 225 and slow but I'm out there hitting the trails regularly. Seeing the BL contestants complete a marathon (on a warm day through hills no less) makes me feel good about the world.

And to all those "real runners" dissing us because we "aren't fast enough" or "aren't strong enough" or let's be honest "not cool enough for you", I say phbbbbtt!

I don't even know why they care. We are all trudging along in the back, they never see us. Heck they're home by the time we come on through the finish gate. I think it really boils down to them being bothered that their little clique is somehow less cool because the rest of us are now out there trying to get fit.

Not all of us are blessed with: genetic advantage, time to train, and youth. And because of that we should somehow be disallowed from trying to run long distances?

I always want to ask these people just what is the minimum criteria? Is it a 4 hour marathon? 3 hours? Just exactly when do the rest of us earn the right to say we ran a marathon? How fast is your time, hunh?

I run faster than some and slower than many. I don't judge any of them. On an out and back race I will clap for the elite as they are coming back and give a thumb's up to those I meet on my return lap. We are all trying to run the best race we can.

Sorry it just ticks me off when I encounter people with that attitude. They seem to need to put others down just to pick themselves up. I try not to let it bother me but sometimes it still does.

I do have an opinion on what a marathon should be to count as "running" but for the purpose of the BL, I think that's largely irrelevant. I never make fun of anyone doing any kind of exercise. It all counts and what counts more is the attempt.

I also have an opinion of what counts as a century on a bike which is my chosen exercise. Lots of people can't do it but if they complete the 100 miles, that's still a great accomplishment regardless of how long it takes.

Like putting others down and attributing their success as being "blessed" rather than attributing their accomplishments to hard work and taking care of themselves:

Dare I say... Hansky is right. Someone can train hard, overcome many difficulties and obstacles and become an elite runner... and still be an elitist *******. :D

Nah....

While elite athletes can and do improve, I'm convinced that the ability to run sub 6 minute miles with any regularity is a physical gift. I could diet till I weighed 150 lbs and I still couldn't do that. I simply don't have enough fast twitch muscle fiber. I have plenty of endurance but not much speed. I'm a bit better at riding simply due to lots of practice but even there, there is just so much training and diet can do.
Hansky does make a good point. I was ranting but I did not mean that other runners are faster/stronger just because of the luck of genetics. I never meant to imply that they are all just having it easy or denigrate how hard they have worked to get to where they are.

But that still doesn't mean they should be looking down at all the rest of us mere mortals merely because we want to run the same race they are in, far behind them.

As for what time you get say "I ran a marathon" well that's not worth even discussing. :) There's plenty of people who run a whole marathon at a very slow pace but are running the whole way. There's others who walk through every water stop but still way fast finishers. We all have our own opinions on what constitutes running. For me, I think it's about 5 hours or less (not that has anything to do with my own marathon times... :) )

I do admit to a certain amount of thinking that a marathon time over 6 hours or so is really a fast walk. But who am I to judge? Does that make me an elitist ahole?

They announced Jillian's replacement. Should get a few more male viewers.

Anna Kournikova....

Anna Kournikova....
Yikes... she had the personality of a bag of rocks when they did that episode with her last season (or maybe it was the season before).

That is a big concern for me. I really worry about her "personality"... ;-)

Actually I tend to agree that this may be a real issue. I have issues with Bret and Cara already. One trick ponies. Cara Can box and Bret has that bizarre martial art that no one ever heard of.

The article that I read about Anna joining the cast, which I can't find the link to now, mentioned that she was joining other "judges" Cara and Bret. I thought that it was really weird that Bob was not mentioned, and that the article referred to them as judges instead of trainers.

Could they maybe be changing the format of the show somehow?
The new format is supposed to be announced tonight at the finale.

New format? I've read nothing about that. I hope they don't dork it up too much. The show works cause it's normal people trying to figure out the same problems the home viewer is. If this gets turned into something else, the appeal might not be the same.
I wouldn't mind a format change where gameplay is somewhat eliminated, or greatly reduced.

If they're talking format change and bringing in a celebrity (versus a legit trainer?) and then throw in the word "judges" and I don't have a good feeling about this.

If you google it, you find that different web sites use the terms trainer and judge nearly interchangeably. I wouldn't read too much into it. At least, not yet.
