You might give dd_rescue a try. dd_rescue makes a binary copy from the failed drive to your new drive. Keeping the old drive cool with a drive cooler or fan may help also. The copy will probably take over 8hrs depending on how many read re-tries are required.

Here is my deal.
I have a Tivo Series 2 TCD140060 w/ a subscription through next March.
I am stuck on the "welcome, powering up" screen
Most assurredly, the drive is dead. I have confirmed using WDTools that it has SMART failures in several areas
I have another drive sitting here waiting to be installed in the machine (actually it is already in, more on that later)
Before I drop the $20 on Instantcake, I was wondering if there is anyway to check the unit to make sure that a newly imaged drive will/should fix the problem.
The reason that I am trying to make sure is:
I have done a lot of research on this (this board and dealcommunity) and decided to try to "find" an image via P2P. I located and successfully downloaded a couple of instantcake images neither was specifically for my tivo (t60 and tcd540 which i thought would be close enough), but I was hoping to either get lucky or be able to assess if the tivo is able to be fixed.
Both images pretty much gave the same result as having no hard drive in the Tivo at all, "welcome, powering up" screen with two amber lights staying lit.
I was hoping that the downloaded images would at least get to another screen to give some indication that the machine can be salvaged.
I am ready to purchase the correct version of IC, but I was just looking to get a warm and fuzzy from someone that it probably isn't the motherboard or powersupply (as I am getting video, just those darned yeller lights)
Anyone have any experience running the tivo through pre-boot diagnostics or anything?
If there is not anyway of knowing, I will just buy it and hope for the best.
If this message would be more fit for the underground, I would be happy to move it there.

BTW, the T60 is a series 1 unit.

Home USer - I thought dead was dead but it looks like it was doing OK in transferring the data. It got to 1.1GB transferred in the last 75 MIN but I am getting hdc:dma_timer_expiry:dma status ==0x61 and 0x60
hdc:lost interrupt
over and over. Right before this point the curr rate dropped from 2300kB/s to 146
I will give it until I get home from work tomorrow.

I used Instant Cake to revive a Series 2. Worked great and worth $20 not to have to dig through the web to put the pieces together myself.
I believe they have a moneyback guarantee if it doesn't work for you, but it probably will (assuming you correctly identify the TiVo model before download).

We have designed InstantCake to be as easy-to-use as possible, however we cannot guarantee that it will work on your specific PC, as some older systems have trouble booting from CD, or may not have enough memory to load the InstantCake software properly. PTVupgrade is not responsible for InstantCake not working on your PC, or if you cannot get the software to work properly on your PC. If you are concerned about this possibility, please do not purchase the product.
The PC part of it, I am confortable with I just was hoping to diagnose the tivo before making the purchase.

10 Days, too many errors probably not.
Just for a follow up. Purchased the INstant Cake for my Tivo and restored the image. Let me say that it was easy as..... PIE?
