Ok since you clicked on this thread you must be interested. Please tell me who has paid for shows like this to be downloaded and watched on a tiny screen? I just can't wrap my head around these new techology where people pay to see 'free' tv on tiny screens.

I have been converting my tivo to go'ed shows of family guy and simpsons and converting them to iPod format.

They look great on the screen! Perfect for at work, I set it up on my palm in the cradle and it makes a holder and I watch tv all day :)

If I didn't have tivo I would consider buying some cartoon episodes

Cartoons look better than non animation on the ipod, not that regular looks bad or anything.

mike your stuff is free and i can see how it would come in handy to see stuff at work instead of working. But i'm more talking about the 1.99 or 99 cent or whatever things where you watch csi on your 2 inch screen. I can't imagine watching lost or something on anything but my large screen for 'free'. It seems like people literally pay more for less in this case and for once, i'm not exaggeratinig

Yeah but people also download the shows and watch them on their computer. And if you have already watched it on your computer and own the show, why not watch it on your iPod :)

Yes, people buying Lost or CSI to JUST put it on their iPod are either rich are stupid.

Lot's of people have, it seems. Steve mentioned the number of downloaded shows during the MWSF Keynote a few weeks ago. I'm rewatching it now to find that number (can't seem to find it on-line)

Edit:

The number is 8 Million videos since October 12th, when they launched the video download service on iTunes Music Store. That's all videos, not just TV shows.

Remember, you can watch them within iTunes. You don't need the new iPod. I downloaded an epsiode of "Monk" a few weeks ago (it was a free download). I played it back full screen on my 12" iBook (on the airplane, flying back from San Francisco). It looked OK. Certainly acceptable to me. Also, you can hook up the iPod with video to a TV and play back on that. (maybe while travelling in a hotel room or something). I've heard it looks OK. Not great, but comparable to stuff recorded on standalone TiVo in medium or basic quality (I use medium for all of my stuff)

Well since I can't fathom watching tv on a computer either :) Maybe it's where my computer is or something but that doesn't do anything for me. I dont think this technology as a whole will ever be for me. I just "have" to watch everything on my big screen :) Maybe it's a luxury I didn't realize I had before and also my needs obviously are way different than everyone else who doesn't have the luxury of being near their tivo every night.

Even stuck in a hotel with a 25 inch SD tv, I doubt i'd watch on a ipod sized screen instead.

Hey I wonder if all these people buying these downloads even have tivo or a vcr? If not, then I can definitely see the niche here. Watching stuff you missed. Maybe in my shortsightedness I assumed we all have tivos :) oops my fault.

I've never been to a hotel where the inputs on the TV actually work (i.e., there's no way to switch to the input using the crippled remote they give you). I wish they did.

I've never tried them myself, but I have seen a few TVs that had the inputs. Sometimes, the TV themselves have buttons on them. Both in hotels and in cruise ships. For cruise ships, I've heard reprots of it working for people. actually, now that I think about it, when I went to Chicago a few years back for a TiVo Community meet, some people brought XBoxes, and thye were able to hook them up to the TVs in the hotel.

I would not watch TV on a computer while at home either. But at 35,000 feet in an airplane, I don't have my 31" TV and cable TV signal at my disposal. However, I probably have a notebook computer. It can be a way to catch up on a TV show you missed.

Most of us here have TiVos. But sometimes stuff happens and it misses a recording for some reason. cable goes out. Power goes out. Some weird conflict you didn't expect. Whatever. Having the ability to easliy and quickly download that one missed episode of "Lost" is pretty cool. Sure, there is bittorrent, but if you like to keep thing on the "up and up", an iTMS purchase lets you do that.

Another thing you may probably don't see is that people are using their iPods on the go. They aren't sitting at home, on the sofa, wtaching "lost" on the iPod. Rather, they are riding the bus, or riding the subway. Or waiting for the subway or waiting for an airplane, or maybe wiaiting for a doctor appointment. The iPod is very compact and portable. You can easily take it any place. Before, you just had tunes. Now, you can catch some video

I've bought a few things through iTunes (episdodes of shows I'd missed, and one when it first came out just to see the quality). The quality just doesn't do it for me zoomed up any further than about quarter screen on my computer.

I like the concept, however. Video on demand. It bugs me that I have to watch a show at a certain time, or set something up to record that show. That's why TiVo is approaching my dream system... but I still have to program it and monitor it. I want somewhere I can go that I can download or stream episodes and watch them when I want.

So if I could see what I see now (probably on average a dozen shows a week) on demand, for about the same price as I pay now, I'd be a happy camper.

Very cool - I can totally fathom buying a few favorite episodes to have on your video iPod. If I had a video iPod, that is (I have a 3rd gen iPod). I hope that one of these shows gets a free download of the week so I can check it out.

The only thing I can't fathom is paying $35+ to download an entire season of a show when the DVD set costs the same or less.

Maybe they don't have DVD players? But really...You mean you can't transfer from your 2 inch screen to your dvd burner? Yikes!!! How about hook up the thing to your tv to watch a big picture? nah doubt that would work. zoinks! Sounds quite limiting to me. And what do you do if the ipod crashes or don't they do that?

Those things are not in my life at all. (except the DR). so obviously this isn't meant for me.

anyone :) seems like i'm happy with my hdtivo and 57" screen but when i hear of all this newfangled stuff it makes me wonder what i'm missing out on. I guess i'm too easily placated.

enjoy your pod thingies everyone. For we are blessed to have this new technology at our fingertips when so many others dont.

actually i must confess to having burnt the entire Beavis collection on dvd when mtv had the run of it last year. --- extending hands upwards in a beavis like motion!

I've got a Season Pass for Beavis and Butthead on MTV2. It picks up episodes on a regular basis.

I don't have a iPod that plays video (yet). Just an iPod photo. I use it mostly when I'm travelling on airplanes. (I typically take about two round trips per month)
