Basic cable included in HOA, What package to add?

So my basic cable was negotiated for my entire condo complex and they decided to get some deal from Comcast to get everyone basic cable. Can I add 2 cable cards to my tivo S3 with this package and add the HD package without upgrading to a digital package? I want to get the HD channels as cheap as possible. What's the best solution... I don't really need the regualr digital channels, basic and HD would be just fine by me.

I doubt anyone can answer that for you (except Comcast), since such negotiated deals may each have their own terms and conditions.

You want HD channels as cheap as possible? Go to Solidsignal.com and order an OTA antenna, thats going to be the cheapest way to get HD. Its FREE. Im betting if you pay your condo a fee, and they have a deal with comcast it may be very difficult getting in to a cable card, but they will have to figure that out sometime soon. for when the analog switch gets turned off and people will need cable boxes. Good Luck.

If the HOA pays for basic, federal law requires all the local channels to come with. I expect taking what is free (or paid through HOA dues) is the cheapest alternative.

As I mentioned above, your local HD channels should come for free with basic. The Local HD are likely QAM channels, which means you need cablecards to get the schedule information from TiVo. Unfortunatley, Comcast requires you subscribe to a "digitial" tier to get the cablecards. Comcast has stated publically that they are not offering an HD tier, and they try to lead the public to believe this is for the public's benefit. This may change over time, but I currently dissagree.

Most people get the basic digitial tier, which Comcast includes with a multitude of filler channels and a handfull of HD channels. The number of HD channels is supposed to grow, but, in Seattle, we have not had a new HD channel since early January.

When I had the basic digital tier, I ended up deleting almost all of the regular SD digital channels, and kept the HD channels. I kept this package while my one year at $11.99 was good then switched to the HBO package for $7.99 for the first 6 months. I watch the HBO tier more than all of the channels on the digital tier combined but still wish I did not have to get the digital tier to get ESPNHD and ESPN2HD.

HBO (which includes Cinimax) is swithcing half its channels to HD in 2007 and the other half in 2008. Hopefully, Comcast follows this schedule, but I somewhat doubt it. Instead, I think Comcast will take 2 to 3 years before they offer all HBO channels in HD. Currently, Comcast offers 1 HBOHD channel and 1 CinimaxHD channel, at least in my area.

Thanks for the input... I do have an OTA antenna but wanted to make the switch to cable cards. I received a letter from my HOA stating anything above the basic service I will need to pay the difference so I assume it's upgradable and should only cost me a smaller additional fee to add anything not currently included. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that you could add the HD package and the cablecards to a basic cable plan but I may have to search to find it. It may have been over at AVS forums.
