I have a Roamio that's quite a few years old. Some weeks back I noticed it getting a bit louder so I ordered a replacement drive, a 3TB WD Red WD30EFRX. Over the weekend, we noticed it was hung on Starting up (we didn't power cycle it) so I figured the drive was dead. I tried using MFStools, etc. but the original drive showed no partitions. I plugged the WD Red into the case and powered it on, but it didn't go to starting up. For kicks, I plugged in a SSD drive and got the Starting up and it went to into restore mode. I tried the Red again and it's not working.... I've got the Roamio with external adapter and 500gb HD, wondering if the external doesn't have enough power to spin up the 3tb?

A plain Roamio (external) power supply is economical end easy to replace. The Roamio plus/pro is a bit harder and more expensive but not really bad.

My Pro started "skipping" during replay. It recorded fine but skipped forward about 10 sec about every minute. A new power supply fixed it. Worth a try, IMO.

Final update. The replacement 3a power supply from Amazon fixed the startup issue. No problems with the WD Red. I probably should have tried the original drive again, but took it as an opportunity to cleanup season passes and start fresh...
