I'm trying to help a friend with a weird audio issue.
Initially he had his sources (TiVo and Apple TV) going to his AVR. Then one HDMI cable to his TV. Everything was fine until the TV died. So the new TV, a Samsung "smart" TV, has all the usual apps. When he ran an app (Netflix, Apple TV, Disney+) on the TV there was either no sound or he had to enable the TV's built-in speakers.
So he ran the source (only a TiVo now) directly to the TV. And ran a toslink audio cable from the TV to the AVR. The problem is that sometimes the AVR is indicating Dolby Digital, sometimes it is indicating Stereo. He says the Apple TV and Netflix app indicate Dolby Digital, the TiVo and Disney+ app indicate Stereo.
The TiVo is set to Dolby Digital. But he can hear the PCM "bongs" when using the TiVo. And he's checked the settings in Disney+ and doesn't see anything related to audio. I believe he's also checked the TV's audio settings.
Any idea why some of the TV's apps trigger Dolby Digital on the AVR and some trigger Stereo?
