I rent my TiVo through my cable provider and I just received a letter that it needs to be replaced as it is susceptible to a hard drive failure. Anyone out there familiar with this issue? My MG2 has been mostly trouble free, though occasionally when I'm cycling through tuners, I'll run into one with a blank screen and no activity. Rebooting the box always clears up the issue. I'm wondering if this is caused by a failing hard drive.

Curious, I wonder if that Arris box has the same laptop hard drive as the Tivo Bolt? I ask as the Tivo Bolt hard drives seem to have close to a 100% failure rate at 3 years or so, based on my experience and the number of threads here.
FWIW, I'm still on the stock 3 TB drive in my Bolt+. I activated it around end of April 2017 as part of the "once in a lifetime" transfer offer where I paid some $ to move my lifetime sub from my TiVo HD to a new Bolt+.

I have been keeping it cooler for years first view laptop cooling pads and now via AC Infinity fans.

This is one of the reasons why cable TV operators are migrating toward IPTV with cloud DVR, where all the recordings are stored on their servers, and customers have simple, cheap boxes with no moving parts inside (e.g. custom Android TV boxes, Rokus, Fire TV sticks, etc.).

Any word if RCN is expanding their new IPTV service out to their traditional cable network (as an eventual replacement for QAM-based cable TV) or is it still just restricted to those few locations served by RCN's newer fiber-to-the-home network?

I'm not sure, but they did roll out the 3-day buffer "Catchup" feature on traditional cable TiVos that was previously only available on their IPTV TiVos: Restart/Catchup feature on MSO-issued non-IPTV TiVos
I wouldn't be surprised if they're headed in that direction though, as they haven't added any significant new content to the cable line-up in years.

Yeah, I saw the thread you posted on that topic earlier today. That's a nice feature to have. I guess it depends on having your TiVo connected to broadband so that the catchup content can be streamed from RCN's servers to it?
Yes, I'm pretty sure it requires broadband connectivity. The playback controls are pretty much identical to those used in the regular VOD system, and I'm fairly certain that's fully IP-based at this point.

It's been a while since this thread was active, but I thought I'd add to it... Just had my DCX900 (from RCN) die a horrible, three blinking lights, death. Hadn't heard about any recall, but the tech said this has been happening a lot. So I guess they're just letting them fail, then replacing them. That's a pain, since I lost all my recorded content. 😞
