Going to make my first TiVo purchase and it will go in my bedroom, where we don't watch much TV, but i need a second PVR because we have 3 shows on at the same time this viewing season and with a 6 mo old baby, it's not always a given you can watch something live.

I currently have a SciAtl 8300HD PVR from my cable company, which is staying, for now. I will add a TiVo to the bedroom, and if I like it as much as everyone says I should, I will replace my SciAtl box with a TiVoHD.

My dilemna is what to put in the bedroom. I originally intended to get a single tuner Series2 and take advantage of getitng it for free after rebate. But, I'm concerned with it going EOL in the near future, and thus no more updates, AND, I'm concerned that if my local cable company drops their general analog broadcast, the box is useless to me without getting a digital cable box from the provider, which I don't want to do, as I want to get away from having ANY equipment from them (except for CableCARDs).

Is an EOL concern worthwhile? Even if it does go EOL soon? I imagine the box is just going to work and it won't be much an issue?

So, I'm not sure if I get a TiVoHD for the bedroom, or a TiVo2.

Free after rebate or not, I wouldn't buy a new Series 2 box these days.

Why not just future proof yourself and get a Tivo HD box?

If you're going to pay monthly fees to Tivo then I would buy the Tivo HD. You might as well have HD and be ready for the future. Only reason to consider a S2 is if it has Lifetime.

just to note - you can hook analog straight up to the TiVio HD (without cable cards) and it will work fine as a 2 tuner box, also the TiVo HD lets you hook up a small indoor antenna and get some HD content without changing your cable lineup. but no cable setup difference between TiVo HD and a S2 model.

that being said your case is a good candidate for a free S2 in the bedroom and if analog does stop being provided then get a Tivo HD and transfer whatever sub you have on the S2 to the latest gen of HD model. All you do is have a free TiVo to pass along or junk as the case may be.

The S2 is not near EOL from a TiVo standpoint and updates will be coming for it for quite a while that make sense for a Standard Definition Model, and yes it will work just the same as the day you bought it, no matter what TiVo does with its model lines. See the S1 model as an example of that

I asked this question of TiVoJerry at the recent Orlando con, and he said that the S2 was still a current product and still being manufactured. I know this doesn't prove anything (if I were in his position I'd probably have to say the same thing even if I knew something was in the wind), but it's a data point.

Series 2 software support is going nowhere anytime soon.
They will continue to work as long as you can provide an analog signal to them.

If you want to futureproof and not have a box, I concur, get the TiVoHD or Series 3.

well if he had to pay money for the S2 I would agree but since you can get an S2 for free or one thread even had you getting 31$ back then whats to futureproof?

Drop the S2 when the time comes and be truly future proofed by being able to get the latest HD model at the future time you really need to use it.
