I've basically uploaded an entire season of a show in mpg format. Everything works great and looks excellent on the playback but, each episode is listed individually in the "Now Playing" list and not in a folder like the regular tivo recordings.

I've attempted to simply change the file extension from .mpg to .tivo and tivo desktop will not list the file as being in the Tivo Recordings folder. I've also tried re-encoding with videora and then uploading (then re-naming/uploading) and no luck.

I upgraded the HDD (a long time ago) but other than that I've not hacked my tivo and I'm not running any 3rd part tivo apps or anything.

Any suggestions appreciated, even a simple "not possible" would help.

at this moment I trying to figure out the problem with my mpeg videos
just yesterday my tivo did an upgrade and now I can't watch my mpeg videos.
Apparently, now we have to get Tivo Desktop Plus Key ($24.99) in order to watch the mpegs (I remember it was free, I am wrong). What's your opinion? by the way, I am a letter to them about it.

Any update on this? I'm running into this problem myself now. I glanced through the linked thread above but most of that is years old... I was just wondering if ther's been any progress on this idea?

I suppose it comes down to a matter of preference, but I gave up on Tivo Desktop (even the Plus version which I purchased) a long time ago. It simply doesn't offer support for enough formats and doesn't offer other features that some of the third party solutions do.

Do yourself a favor and use PyTivo, if you can. There are some fantastic tutorials in these forums dealing with how to set it up.

I actually use Galleon for home media features (music, photos, and podcasting) and I use PyTivo to transfer videos from my PC to my Tivos.

I use the Tivo2Go feature of Galleon if I want to transfer video from my Tivo to my PC. It works great, and it's all free.

PyTivo will put your episodes in a folder for you if you also give it the correct MetaData (there are apps out there to specifically do this) AND if the program ID for the series appears in the program guide.

It's easily done for the cost of TiVo Desktop Plus.

I have a folder named 'desktop plus autotransfer folder' set up for automatic transfers. I copy the folder named 'John From Cincinnati' to that folder and everything gets transferred to a folder on the tivo called 'John From Cincinnati' However, there is a limit of 10 items per folder.

I have heard that PyTivo is good, but I have not tried it. I use TivoDesktop Plus.

Here's what I do. For Movies I rip off of my DVDs, I have a subfolder in my TiVo Recordings Folder called "DVD Movies". Then, I open TiVo Desktop + and there is a button for sharing video, music, etc. You click on that, then select the Video tab. From there, I then browse the PC and find the DVD Movies (or whatever you name it) folder and select it and then "publish" it. Once I set the options in that screen and hit OK/Apply (I forget offhand), iut will begin transferring anything in that folder.

I do this also for TV episodes from DVDs. I make folders like "Veronica Mars S1 Eps 1-7 of 15".

It's very easy once you get into the program and see how it is done.

With Tivo Desktop plus, you choose a folder or folders to hold recordings to be transferred, which can be set to be done automatically or manually. Say you have a folder that you use to hold copies of your DVD's of various TV shows. That folder could be named "TV DVDs" If you put individual recordings of "How I met your Mother" in that folder, they will transfer to the Tivo as single items rather than in a folder. But if you create a subfolder within that folder titled "How I met Your Mother" and put the recordings in the sub folder, the transferred recordings will be placed into a folder on the Tivo's NPL labeled "How I Met Your Mother". Within that folder the episodes will be listed individually like any other folder.

Here's a screenshot of TiVo Desktop Plus. You define folders and those folders are transferred to the TiVo.

You can also transfer recordings with pyTiVo so they are stored in folders, but to do that, I believe you have to create text (metadata) files identifying the program.
