Anybody watch The Bachelor?

I don't. I'm not into Reality TV at all.

So imagine my surprise when my sister sent me a text to go check out the list of bachelorettes for this season because one of them is my cousins daughter (she's #7 on the list) and another (#27) is my aunt, her grandmother.

I have never watched this show, don't know anything about it, except it seems to be a game where you win a woman? I don't understand why a woman would want to be on it, to be honest, but I'm hoping someone can explain it to me.

Also, why would my Aunt want to be in a contest against her own granddaughter?

(sure I could pick up the phone and call, but it's more fun to talk about it here).

OMG...this has got to be a new low for this show.

I'm sure your aunt is a nice lady, but this has train wreck mixed with some horrible embarrassment written all over it when the smoke clears.
No

It's a goof...sheesh!
Yup, I watch it. Guilty pleasure. But it's gotten worse an more exploitative in the last couple seasons. I saw the commercial and saw a clip of an older lady on crutches and thought that was a new low. Can't believe that's a relative of yours? What's she thinking?

They don't "win a woman," exactly. It is essentially a dating show on steroids, one guy has dates with lots of women and eliminates some every week. It's a two way street, the women can leave any time they feel like there's no point pursuing it. Not many have, but it has happened. Through the long course of the show, there's been a couple actual marriages between couples that ended up together at the end, there's maybe one other couple still together, and the rest all broke up eventually.
I would love to know the angle/gimick involving your aunt.

As for going on a reality show motives differ. These types shows can launch a career. The Real World kids will often do their season and a number of Challenge seasons after. Not to mention all the college appearances.

Now for this show some of the girls will go to become the next Bachelorette, some think they will find true love. Thing is total production time is around 6 weeks and some of the dates are so over the top it is no shock how they can "fall in love" and then later it does not work out. I think more relationships come from ex contestants meeting and dating from the parties they all attend than from the actual show process.
I was reading the comments on the web site and several people have said she's there really only to introduce her granddaughter, Brittany (contestant #7).

Brittany is very pretty, and has been on Hooters calendars and so on. She most definitely is the kind who would be excited to enter a beauty contest.

My aunt, on the other hand, is married to my Uncle Tom. They have 3 children. They divorced many years ago and then remarried a year later on their anniversary so they'd still have the same anniversary. I haven't seen them in ages, though. Tom is the oldest of my fathers generation and doesn't travel as much as he used to.
I saw a commercial for this upcoming season and it really grabbed me. It's just this girl bawling her eyes out and all but one fake nail has been popped off her hand. I can't wait!
I do watch the show but pay a less attention than in the past as the novelty's worn off.

What the OP mentioned at first is crazy but ok, if the grandmother's only there introduce, I guess that's ok. If she were competing, wow, that would be strange...
I'm guessing it will be something like, the grandmother gets out of the limo. Ben is shocked as is the audience. Then she introduces her granddaughter who gets out and everyone has a nice laugh.

On the plus side, your Aunt has no tattoos....
Huh.

Apparently my cousins daughter came to the same conclusion. I started the season with 2 relatives on national TV and now I have none.
She was the one who quit?

Yeah. I didn't watch it, but my various family members posted all sorts of Facebook comments about how proud they were of her for deciding it wasn't for her and being honest enough to leave.
New season starts tonight. I never used to watch this show, but then my husband and I started drafting teams of contestants the first night, just to see if either of us could pick the "winner" right off the bat. Now it's become a campy tradition.
nice spoilers <just kidding>

Ereth, I'm assuming they look nothing like you?
I plan to watch, but as usual, I won't be paying really close attention. The novelty wore off long ago.

Look at the dates....the Ereth stuff was from last year. Not sure if you caught that.

I watched the first episode. I wasn't a huge fan of this guy when he was on the Bachelorette but I liked him better in this. I enjoyed the visit from Ari.

I just did :)
If it hasn't happened already I would recommend a new thread for the current season. Thanks.
