Any Issues With Elite From Early Adopters?

2020 Views 21 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  CallMeRich
I have two Series 3's and one of them has been having some minor issues for a while. Thinking about getting an Elite to replace it and I have two questions please:

1) I've read some minor issues on the board (Season Pass issue when using the website to transfer them, daylight savings time in Arizona) but nothing major. Since this is essentially a revised / upgraded Series 4, is it safe to assume there should be no major bugs with the Elite? Are those of you who have been using it for a couple of days happy with it?

2) Is there any reason I should NOT purchase one now rather than wait a few months? I have to believe a Series 5 (assuming there is one) would be at least a year away and any price cuts would similarly be a ways off.

Thanks very much in advance for your input.

I know I'm pleased with my Elite. Although the video provider list isn't populated yet. But for it's primary function, recording my programs, it's very working well. This weekend I will be removing the two Premieres my Elite is replacing. And I will move my Elite to it's permanent location.
Thanks Aaron. What do you mean the video provider list isn't populated yet? Do you mean the guide hasn't been updated yet? If so, is that simply because you haven't connected it or because it is taking an unusually long time to update?

I believe he's referring to Amazon Prime VOD, Hulu+, etc.
My Elite is not passing 408i natively even though all output formats are enabled. 480i is getting upscaled to 720P. Most people would not native but I have a Lumagen Radiance scaler so I do.

My current set is an "old" Sony KV2500 and I'll probably upgrade to an LG 3D shortly, so I don't see the 480i being an issue - but thanks for the input.

Oh - and one other question while I'm at it. Any difference in purchasing from Weaknees vs Tivo directly (other than the $25 discount)?

I never checked specifically with the Elite, but I know with my two tuner Premeires, 480i out was terrible. So I only have my TiVos send 480p, 720P, 1080i, and 1080P24 to my DVDO DUO.

Although with cycling through four tunes I'm seriously thinking about just setting the Elite for 1080i and 1080P24 to avoid the handshaking when switching between resolutions. With the two tuner one I didn't have to cycle through as many channels. But with the Elite, I have to cycle through all the tuners to get back to the first one. And with the extra handshaking it's taking longer than I would like if the channels don't all have the same resolution.
Okay, that's not going to be an issue for me, thanks.

It is not functioning like my other Premieres so I opened a case with TiVo.

The only problem I've had with my Elite is constantly losing the TiVo sound effect when clicking through the main menu and My Shows. I'm using HD menus, audio setting is set to "Dolby Digital" and connected via HDMI cable to my receiver. I replaced my Premiere XL with the Elite using the same connection setup and never had this issue.

So far, I found if I change my audio setting to "Dolby Digital to PCM" the problem goes away, but I don't really want to use this setting. Again, never had this issue with the Premiere XL.

Tonight, I'm going to try and connecting the Elite to my receiver using digital audio cable and see what happens.

Same thing with my Elite, but it's no big deal to me. My Series 3 was the same way, so I'm used to it.
The Video Provider List on my Elite's isn't populated, and YouTube doesn't work. I opened a case with TiVo earlier today.
Okay, thanks everyone. I don't see anything that would be an issue and I'm off to order one now. Very much appreciate all the input :)

That's interesting. Do you hear the sound effects when using trick play features on HD recordings? Maybe TiVo finally encoded the sound effects in DD?

Some receivers are kind of finicky when playing DD. If the data stream isn't constant they will "fall asleep" and then take a second to recover when they start receiving sound again. If TiVo switched to DD for the effects then short bursts of sound from the effects might not be enough to keep it "awake" so it could create sporadic sound in the menus. I think they had a similar problem with the Pioneer DVD units years ago, which also recorded everything with DD audio, although I thought they eventually came up with a fix for that unit.

The Elite is still the same way as the DirecTV Tivos I had ten years ago. If the program is in DD(which is every HD program) you will not hear the TiVo sounds. And with the window in use in the menus, it is still sending the DD audio while in the menu, so there will be no tiVo sounds. The only time I hear TiVo sounds is when it switches to an SD menu screen. Or if you are on a channel with pcm audio which would be an SD channel. Although many of the premium SD channels used to have DD. No idea if that is still the case since I only have a couple of SD channels in my favorites list.
There is already an Elite initial impressions and issues thread. It would be helpful to keep everything in one place for a least a little while. Please check the first post for current known issues.

It's now working for me.
